Etsy Says It Has a Plan to Draw More Buyers

“”… we can't wait to share the news," it said.”

Apparently, they CAN wait.  Or else they wouldn’t be.  Waiting.  Then again, they COULD have waited a couple weeks to literally decimate their staff given how they knew they were “working on something special” to get back some buyers who are over how they’ve commoditized their site.

Tell you who CAN’T wait though - all their sellers who are (still left) barely hanging on trying to keep their enterprises going while Etsy is so busily composing their empty promise “BIG” news flashes.

100% agree. While all marketplaces are dealing with the behemoth that is Temu these days, at least with Etsy there IS off-site advertising to help you bring in new customers and new sales. That is a really big plus for me that makes a huge difference.

Etsy is going to advertise handmade during Super Bowl. You can guarantee vintage won't get a mention but I'm sure we'll be expected to pay for it.

Even if there is an increase in traffic to Etsy after a Super Bowl ad, these potential buyers are still going to face the daunting current SEARCH algorithm.  And...is Etsy going to mislead the public (again) about items listed for sale being ''unique'' products handmade by creative people?  It might be exciting if the only listings shown to shoppers for 24 hours after kick-off were for actual Handmade, Vintage, and Crafting Supplies with all the sweatshop junque listings being suppressed.  But that will never happen.

Super Bowl ads are horrendously expensive. Last year, a 30-second ad cost $7M! I'd think there be better, less expensive ways for Etsy to attract buyers. Maybe try for an ad during the Puppy Bowl.

However, the viewing audience is crazy big too, making the Super Bowl one of the biggest events in the U.S.

In prior years, I’ve have heard details about Super Bowl Ads. The average Super Bowl viewer is a mid-to-high wage earner and the Ads associated with the Super Bowl are to attract those earners with expendable cash.

Although Super bowl Ads are expensive, in my opinion, Etsy needs more mid aged, high wage earners as Buyers. Trying to make a living off of SuzyQ in their 20’s isn’t cutting it anymore for Etsy and Sellers.

Does that mean “SuzyQ”, (as so catagorized) then doesn’t deserve an opportunity there, or should be so marginalized?  Clearly there’s nothing wrong with attempts to expand market share, but shouldn’t a more ‘matured’ business sense (as so claimed) recognize the best way to achieve that is to leverage a legacy instead of trash it?

Like some other venue we are so familiar with.  And who is ‘suddenly’ seeming to rediscover they want to ‘reach out’ and appeal to those ‘categories’ previously trashed in the name of making a ‘better’ living.

Perhaps some of those who were born silver spoon fed may not appreciate the fact that many of their current better heeled peers were once ‘SuziQ’s (or even JohnQ’s) themselves.  Moreover, are now ironically spending their hard, (or not as hard) earned disposable income on trying to retain or recapture their “20s”.  Because, buyer OR seller, the ‘20’s turn to 30’s, etc., faster than some of these venues change promises to Wall St.

Accordingly, isn’t it sound business sense to accommodate the fact that it’s much easier, and cheaper, to retain a customer (buyers AND sellers) than to try and appeal to a new one?  

Point of interest - per Statista; May 10 ‘23:

“ According to an August 2021 survey among viewers in the United States, 43 percent of respondents said they tuned in to the Super Bowl to watch the commercials. When it came to women, this figure rose to 60 percent, while 24 percent of men said they tuned in to the big game in order to watch ads.”

They ain’t ALL ‘A-listers’ either…

@ LDWCallsOut   You nailed it !    The search is horrible, along with all the useless preschool tests they run.    Fix what is broken and believe me, there is a lot that is broken.    Best news would be to replace Silverman

I've been buying and selling on the Internet for over 25 years.

I've never bought or sold a single item on Etsy!

I would venture to guess most men haven't made a purchase on Etsy, Etsy portrays itself as a girly site. . .

None of my merchandise would be attractive to most men. It's because I stock things I like. I am not into sports, hunting, fishing, drinking beer, video games or expensive electronics.

Do you know that the majority of haute couture fashion designers are men? The majority of famous chefs are men. Fashion and cooking may seem like "girly" occupations, yet they are dominated by men. So please don't lump every Etsy seller into the "girly" category as I'm sure there are jewelry makers and woodworkers, to name two professions, who are men who sell on Etsy.

I just saw the new "gift mode" on my Etsy Home Page.  I looked at some of the links and -- as expected -- I see lots of generic items (lack of imagination by the programmers) and personalized items.  Ugh.

I noticed that the word "vintage" never appears, anywhere.  Not as an interest (like collecting or nostalgia) or as something home/garden decor related.  Again, as expected.

Just for fun, I clicked on Grandmother since I am 70 years old. (but not a granny).  I see shawls (Little House, much?), slippers, garden decor items for warm climates (The Villages?), and of course lots of personalized generic stuff.  Nothing I would ever want or buy.  

Etsy is still clueless.

I myself as a seller try to keep etsy a secret to all the other internet parasite sellers. They don't know how much is there to mine and I'm not telling them...

As for Etsy - a new CEO and a working search would probably help.
