Craigslist FINALLY Launches a Mobile App: Worth the Wait?

Craigslist, the granddaddy of classifieds sites, has finally gone mobile, launching a mobile app on the Apple App Store, as 9to5Mac noted on Wednesday.

The Craigslist app had already garnered 79 ratings by Wednesday afternoon. We cherry-picked some excerpts of reviews that sellers may find helpful:

"Very slick interface. Searching is fast and flexible and it's very easy to post an ad with your phone camera. One thing that took me awhile to notice: you can favorite and hide posts by sliding left. It's very handy but easy not to notice. Also there is a very cool calendar picker when you search for garage sales. I like that a lot."

"The app speeds up flipping through old furniture and cryptic help wanted ads much more efficient and so far I prefer it to using my browser."

"I have been waiting for a Craigslist app for a very long time! This genuinely makes me happy."

"There is a very cool calendar picker when you search for garage sales. I like that a lot."

One user begged for larger thumbnails, and while many of the reviews were positive, one called it too little, too late, pointing to the lack of identity verification, escrow, for example.

GeekWire also wrote about the new app, writing, "Craigslist will have its work cut out for it to catch up to OfferUp's app performance, which has been downloaded more than 80 million times, according to a figure cited by GeekWire last month."

Facebook is becoming a major threat to classifieds sites. Craigslist also competes with shopping apps such as Mercari and Poshmark, which allow buyers and sellers to go beyond their local areas and also offer more ecommerce features.

If you try out the Craigslist app (available on the App Store), please let us know what you think!

Fantastic! Only took 25 years. Too bad I and millions of others don't have an Apple phone.

It's a matter of "infringement".
Craigslist is now positioned to outfit itself with payment gateways and a cart.
I'll be right there when that happens  :o)

I've never heard of releasing an Apple-only app. Anyone know when the Android version is scheduled?

THIS!  Craig has been sitting at his cubicle too long.  Time and technology has passed it by.  I like their help forums and use it, but it's filled with spam.  They need a robot software that will remove the spam.

Too little too late. I've had MAYBE two sales in two years on CL. Facebook marketplace has killed it. If CL comes back to life I would love nothing more than to delete my fake facebook account. ONLY reason I am on FB is for the sales groups.

A LOT of apps start out Apple only, they are easier to program and code. I, for one, could care less about Craigslist, anytime I put something on for more than $10.00, I am slammed with scammers and spammers.. I listed a CRV on there for $600.00 and I had over 100 people within 10 minutes of publishing the ad and only ONE was legit. Pretty sad odds if you ask me. Offer Up and Let Go, if you can weed out the extreme low ball offers, (much like every other selling platform) you can at least not be spammed and scammed to the end of time. I am STILL weeding through all the scammers on  the email associated with my Craigslist account and it has been almost a year

I guess what kind of people use Craigslist varies by location?  The site is unusable where I live since the Personals sections were removed.  The stuff that was in Personals simply moved into all the other sections.  Even the real estate ads and antiques have thinned out considerably, leaving mostly ads for properties and items located in the opiate addiction zones.  No one wants to post an ad for their nonprofit's annual craft show or their decluttering service and have it displayed between ads from sex workers, complete with photos that show EVERYTHING.  Men in my area who tried to use Craigslist to sell years ago had bad experiences with people who had mental health issues or were high showing up for the transaction, and then kooking out in public.

Other sites (some mentioned above) are a much safer bet if you want to sell something.

craigslist is going by the wayside,  since they didnt want to keep up with the the competition,  can remember when they were the only ones out there,  not so anymore.  Jimmy boy got thrown under the bus with his didn't need to cater to all that  needs his site and only needs 50 employees on a billion dollar company, oh well  facebook is his biggest threat along with others,  such a changing world we live in....and so on

The app is available for Android, as well.  (Since the article Ina referenced was written and posted on an Apple page, it's not surprising that there was no mention that an Android version is available on Google Play.  Ina, you may wish to add an Edit/Update at the bottom of your article with a link to the Android version of the app.)

They really need to link saved favorite items and searches to your account, not just to the individual browser/computer/app.

That's more important IMO than having an app.

I can't believe any decent seller would even consider using Craigslist. I tried it once many, many moons ago and immediately started receiving spam left and right. I deleted my listing and never looked back.

Why on earth would I want to sell on a site that allows such things? Let's not forget how unsafe it already is to meet customers offline without advertising on a site where so many evil people lurk, looking for their next victim.

Maybe it's better for smaller cities, but Houston's site is scary.
