eBay Announces Its First Digital Payments Wallet

By: Ina Steiner

eBay announced its first digital payments wallet, a significant development made possible by its taking over payment-processing from PayPal.

eBay CEO Jamie Iannone announced the news at eBay's Investor Day this morning.

"Today I'm thrilled to announce eBay's first digital wallet where you can store cash balance.

"Customers will soon be able to easily accumulate a balance in their eBay account to spend on their next favorite item.

"Allowing customers to seamlessly turn their sales into purchases is yet another example of a unique eBay multiplier effect. With our scale, resources, and talent, the opportunities for payments are just endless."

We'll update this as we learn more, but in the meantime, let us know what you think as a buyer and seller.

Update 3/11/2022: More information can be found in this subsequent blog post.

Assuming this comes to the UK as well, it could actually be a good move.
Maybe with losing sellers & buyers, they have come to realise how people saw and used their PayPal balances for.
I think it has been forced on them.

Managed Payments has certainly had more than its share of chaos.

Why would anyone trust eBay with a digital wallet?

Opt me out!

And . . . Of COURSE, . . . . Minus the agenda of THEM making interest on whatever money YOU have stored within YOUR "Wallet!"  hahahaha

Point No.1 - Surely to be considered as "Revenue" in some twisted fashion to somehow reflect their stock showing as a greater asset.

Point No.2 - Surely a "Trusted" place to store your money without the probability of getting hacked by some external maleficence from another country ( like Ebay's already strong history )

Another transparent burlesque brainstorm from the masters of deception. Ebay is embarrassing themselves at this point.  Haaaa.
They are the 76lb. welterweight in the Heavyweight title fight.  Bruised, abused & NO chance of winning.

Now that I am use to Managed payments; I am keeping things the same - once a week deposits into my Government insured account. All Ebay is trying to do is save Credit Card charges when I buy on Ebay and to have access to interest free money on deposit. I buy on Ebay with whatever card is giving me the most points at the time. A few cents for me is better than nothing.

I'm all for more options, but if it's going to be mandatory, I will be buying a lot less on eBay (not that I buy all that much now).  I want my credit card cash back, and I also want to keep track of income through deposits (this would be made more difficult if my eBay income was the amount eBay deposits in my bank PLUS my eBay purchases).  I know this is the way PayPal works, but there's a major difference: I can withdraw from PayPal as frequently as I'd like.  So, if I need to make a purchase with PayPal, my first step is always to make sure all money is transferred out.  That can't be done with eBay.

"With our scale, resources, and talent,...." I had to laugh at that. So rather than attempting to fix the issues permeating the site, they want to take on a digital wallet in the hope, I guess, that money will just keep recirculating on eBay (accumulate a balance, spend on your next favorite item).

Of course it's a good idea to go back to how things were but I think they have taken too long, missed the boat, people have moved on, and habits have changed.

When ebay canned PayPal and gained 'Direct Access' (a little throw-back to my favorite software from Windows 3.1, if anyone remembers...the first time we were able to make an actual Menu on our computer screens, rather than have to Type stuff just to get to things in our computers!) to my Bank Account, I immediately opened up a Separate Account Just for ebay, with a Limited Amount of Money in it!
You'd think I Didn't Trust Them, or something, huh!?

Ebays reputation for honesty and integrity is at zero - why trust them???

I’m sure the interest will be yours to keep (not) and I’m sure there will be NO offsets against it!!! lmao

Run far far away!!

This rose, by any other name, is a transplanted pay pal balance. Except it only grows in one garden, it’s infested with parasites, and it stinks.

Any bets on how long it will be until they park payouts there, and β€˜compel’ you to get one if you sell?

What’s in YOUR wallet…now?

Gee, only took them a few years to figure out that people like to spend money from sales before it hits the bank account as then it's more "guilt'free" as it isn't "my" money psychologically at that point- it can be justified as "I earned this" versus being part of the general budget for the household.  I guess it's better late than never.

This is about 2 years too late, and comes from what must be one of the least trusted companies on Earth (by it's own customers anyway). There is no way I'd touch this.

So I am understanding correctly this is OPTIONAL??

Let me climb into one of eBay's feeble minds....they are rolling this out as being ''innovative'', something new for sellers. Okay it sounds a lot like the Paypal account of old. Monies received are dumped into the wallet and then need to be transferred into a bank account by me. If I want the funds immediately, I can do so for a ''small'' fee.

I am channeling the brain of a flailing eBay CEO here....think of the revenue float we can realize, now that interest rates are beginning to rise, by funding payouts into a wallet that is useless everywhere except for purchases on eBay, or for transfer of funds into another account - at the wallet holder's expense.

How long until this becomes the standard by which all sellers will receive their funds? Another zero value program, creating more bookkeeping entries, delaying use of funds, that benefits no one except eBay.
