eBay Says It Has No Idea Why Facebook Removed eBay Groups

eBay said it has no idea why Facebook removed certain groups that had "eBay" in the title of their Facebook Groups. Rumors had begun circulating after Christmas that some groups with eBay in their names had been taken down.

The rumors may have spurred some owners to proactively change the names of their groups, which could have given more credence to the rumors as people noticed the changes.

A reseller named Dom who runs the Prime Time Treasure Hunter channel on YouTube and runs a Facebook Group called "Reselling Resource Center for eBay, Etsy, Amazon FBA, Poshmark, & More" informed his members of the rumors but said he was not going to take action until he verified the reports.

On Wednesday, eBay published a post stating it had heard that "a small number of Facebook groups with "eBay'' in the name were removed from Facebook a few days ago."

eBay said that as soon as the removals were brought to its attention, it began actively investigating the cause. "Currently, the team is working directly with Facebook to reinstate the groups that were removed."

eBay also offers some advice to anyone who might have been impacted: "Finally, anyone who proactively changed the name of their FB group to remove "eBay" is encouraged to reinstate the old name," though it also advised sellers to comply with Facebook group rules and with its own rules.

That was surprising advice given how fiercely eBay has protected its intellectual property over the years, suing or threatening to sue coinbay.biz, BayPal.com BrickBay.com, BidBay.com AlternaBay.com, and PerfumeBay.com, to name a few.

Could we be seeing a kinder and gentler side to eBay?

While Facebook has been making inroads into ecommerce and has been particularly successful in attracting eBay sellers to Facebook Marketplace, eBay seems to turn a blind eye to any competitive threat it may pose, appearing comfortable with frenemy status. eBay continues to rely on the social media site as a way to interact with its customers, and many sellers have reported that eBay provides better customer service through Facebook than its own platform.

In yesterday's post, eBay wrote, "As you know better than anyone, community is the cornerstone of eBay. We know the Facebook groups run by you, our sellers, are a critical part of how this community stays connected and informed, and we love seeing the connections among eBay seller groups."

eBay gave instructions on how to contact it to those whose Facebook Groups had been impacted. You can find the full post on the eBay Tech Issues discussion board.

This is because eBay have the strategic acumen of a wet piñata.

Refraining from firing off DCMA takedowns on long-established small biz FB groups is one thing, but eBay staff actively kicking sellers off of eBay's own community forums in order to RE-report customer service issues to their Facebook for business team is simply abject incompetence.

Jamie and team say they're recovering ground from mistakes of the past that resulted in StockX swiping a massive chunk of eBay's sneaker biz from right under Devin Wenig & Kris Miller's nose, but here the new team is apparently clueless to the real threat FB Marketplace poses to their consumer/small biz sellers (this despite the fact that ol' Marni Levine, ex-eBay Seller Operations VP, is now VP Global Commerce Operations at Facebook).

If those sellers weren't already listing on FB marketplace before eBay shooed them of eBay's own platform with instructions to head to FB in order to get the 'good stuff' customer service, you can bet they are selling over there now.

Happy New Year to all!

Let's not forget the eBay Facebook livestream shopping event extravaganza!

Maxed out at 400 viewers, it was certainly a far cry from Walmart's million viewer Twitter social commerce endeavor - guessing they aren't going to want Jamie back any time soon.

Why not use YouTube or maybe even Bevy - the platform they chose for eBay Open Online and the December seller check in that offers all kinds of neat attendee networking features and a convenient record feature for on demand playback, if they remember to turn it on. 😉

Or I don't know...maybe a 26 year old, multi-billion dollar company could come up with some truly magical next-gen experiences, but that would take a tech-led reimagination of the platform and well you know, who really has time or money for such things?

I have yet to sell anything on Marketplace. I got harassed by a car dealer this week, when my ad was listed, PRIVATE SALE only. One guy on facebook who shows to work for Meta (Fakebook) gave an offer of 30k on a listed Audi A4 in pristine condition listed at 39k or offer. I reported him for intentionally low bid, which was an option. The clown of a bidder told me I was a scammer?  Facebook/IG and social media is in need to SECTION 230. The ability to sue them in a court of law1

Could it be that Facebook Marketplaces do not want the competition?  And if this is the case it appears that this could be law suit worthy.

Zuck has proven time and time again that there is no amount of money that is too much for him.   Reports of Facebook taking money from the Russians or other enemies of democracy to influence elections...well what more can you say?

I quite all my eBay Facebook groups a few weeks ago. I posted an issue and held the responses were vile like I was either an idiot or an enemy. Facebook is toxic. If I want toxic I go to Twitter where I expect it
