Etsy Rolls Out Controversial Changes?

By: Ina Steiner

Etsy is making policy changes sellers are discussing, though there's no announcement on its website that we can see.

It appears Etsy notified sellers of a change to its terms of use (or perhaps they noticed on their own), and sellers are left to figure out what exactly is changing. (One seller wrote, "It is very disrespectful for Etsy to force us to hunt for changes in their rules and policies.")

Here's a link to Etsy's "Our House Rules" that go into effect on October 16, 2020.

Here's a link to the current House Rules.

One change a seller noticed was the following provision in the new Terms used as an example of "interference" not allowed:

"Creating or using an independent buyer account to maliciously upvote another shop's negative reviews in order to position those reviews more prominently."

The original poster (cindylouwho2) said that leads her to believe Etsy will be introducing a change in which people can vote on reviews.

A reader told us the fear is that a competitor could upvote bad reviews as "helpful," thereby harming the seller. They also said Etsy appears to be making changes to its payments policy.

Sellers on this thread continue to compare the new and old terms looking for other changes.

Stay tuned!

Just link to your Etsy feedback from your own website.
They won't challenge you because you're linked to their website.
We need to rein in their greed.

Now Etsy is changing search so you never find what you are looking for. Anyone try a five word specific search and see if anything of five or six pages have more than one or two words of your searched for item?

I used a five word search for a type of vintage item, and most of the items shown -- on all the pages -- were relevant to what I was looking for.  But searching in ''handmade'' is a different story.  I mostly use 1 word searches to find items for my blog, narrow that down to ''handmade'', and then narrow it to a specific type of item from the list on the left of the screen.  OMG it's a mess!  The first page of results is okay.  When you reach the bottom of the first page, it says there are (for example) 19 pages of results.  You advance to page 2, and nothing on that pages matches your search term OR the type of item you selected -- and the bottom of the page now says there are 250 pages of results.  Unless your listing shows up on Page 1, it is unlikely your item will ever be seen.

This is a much more significant issue than the possibility that someone might upvote a bad review.  Etsy corporate seems to know how to manipulate the seller community into going after petty issues and treating big problems with ignore.

Nothing that this evil and corrupt company does to manipulate its sellers would ever surprise me.

Trying to get out from under their Off Site Advertising...new rule spell it out: Once your shop has met the criteria of mandatory participation, you will NEVER have the ability to opt out.

I was hoping that by putting my shop on hold for up to the Feb 2021 limit I'd then be offered an opportunity to opt-out. No...so I have closed that store, which had been open since 2009. And opened another--immediately opting out.

If they continue to set unreasonable fees & rules, people will figure out a way to  get around them, or they will leave. All Etsy will be left with are the low hanging fruit: Chinese vendors & newbies to the Etsy game.

I did business on Etsy for a couple years about 5-6 years back. The DAY they implemented their "Payments edict", I left and never looked back.

Ebay?  Let them try and "Manage" me . . . and the same happens.

The phony issue about reviews is just a distraction from Etsy's continued abuse of the sellers.   The more they charge for their ridiculous fees, the worse it gets.
If you sell something allegedly from their offsite ads, they take another 15% off the sale so you end up with maybe 70% of the sale.

Search has been broken for years and now Etsy makes no bones about the fact that they are suppressing listings and deplatforming sellers.  Rumor has it, and it was reported here, that they are apparently monitoring sellers' posts on social media.  Seems that they're even looking at political comments, not just what you say about Etsy's screwups.

Pretty soon Etsy will be just like Bonanza- another make believe market place.  Sad.

Let them pull their stunts. Just make sure you keep evidence of it all and then turn it into the DOJ. It will be like they are stinging themselves.
