Reports of False Postal Delivery Scans Worry Sellers

Postal workers are providing false delivery scans on packages, according to the Washington Post. In an article on Thursday, the newspaper wrote, "across the country, postal workers mark packages still sitting in the post office as "delivered":

"Postal workers said in interviews that they have been pressured by their bosses to perform false scans increasingly over the past six months so that late packages appear to have been delivered - or are delayed because of issues at the delivery address - to ensure they don't count against the agency's delivery statistics."

The issue is gravely concerning to online sellers.

The next day, the Wall Street Journal wrote about another issue of concern to sellers in an article titled, "U.S. Postal Service Benches Its Police Officers Before Election."

"The agency's unilateral order ended daily patrols meant to prevent robberies of blue collection boxes and mail vehicles, and has left letter carriers without escorts on unsafe routes in some of the nation's biggest cities, according to interviews with police officers and union representatives opposed to the change and a copy of the directive, titled "Postal Police Utilization," reviewed by The Wall Street Journal."

That change comes as reports of mail theft have skyrocketed, according to a recent NBC News report. It cited Postal Inspection Service data showing mail theft reports soared by 600% over the past three years, from about 25,000 in 2017 to roughly 177,000 through Aug. 24 of this year.

However, the Postal Inspection Service also called its own data unreliable, telling NBC the numbers included "a significant number of reported customer complaints unrelated to mail theft, such as mailbox vandalism, mail delivery issues, and matters unrelated to the mail or Postal Service."

Less protection of packages as reports of mail theft grows, along with reports of fake delivery scans, add to sellers' postal concerns.

While I have not encountered any false delivery scans on my outbound shipments, delivery scans on inbound parcels that were shipped via Priority Mail and First Class Package Service have been falsified over the past six months or so.

Although some of the USPS scans indicate packages have been delivered to my address, the actual delivery occurs on the following day.

Naturally, eBay reports such shipments as being delivered, which could eventually wind up being an issue if the post office fails to actually deliver a parcel.

Our mail is delivered by truck to our curbside mailbox. Our regular carrier is great and extremely helpful all the time. I get a lot of registered mail from Europe that is normally not an issue. But when my regular carrier is off and a substitute delivers our mail they occasionally will not get out of the truck to bring a registered letter to the house for signature. They will leave a slip in the box indicating "no one was home" even when we are definitely at home.

I have filed sooooo many missing mail reports with the USPS I lost count.  Something for sure is happening with the scan.  I will take a package to the PO on Monday and 2-3 days later it's not scanned.  It takes a missing mail report or a postcard to the post office to get the package moving and scanned.  I've had to apologize to toooo many buyers about the delayed mail.  The one good thing that's happening w/ the USPS, if the package is "delayed" it will note that when you track it.
Another strange thing happened just this week.  I was informed by Mercari that a package I mailed last week was being returned......not by the buyer but by the post office!  And there was an ALERT! on the tracking.  The package was out for delivery and then for some strange reason, it was returned to the post office and is now coming back to me.
I try to use UPS as much as possible.

totally agree, all these problems started as soon as he came in.  I've been selling online for about 20 years, I can count on one hand lost packages, I've had more problems in the last 6 months than ever before.  I understand covid and delays, most people due, but this weird stuff is totally unacceptable.

All part of the USPS internal strike.
They are upset they can no longer milk overtime that is not needed.
Steal if you will.

They demand our tax dollars to subsidize China and Amazon to compete against us sellers and when they get called out on it, "Orange Man Bad" but Orange Man is standing up for ME, the American Seller.

Do NOT fund these criminals to undermine our hard work.

I stand against the USPS.
I stand with my country, my president, America First.
Not only for me, but also for you confused sellers too. The ones who can't grasp what is going on here.

Everyone here is a real, live ''actual seller'' with tons of experience, and everyone here is pretty clear what is going on with the USPS, which is almost entirely related to the new head of the USPS's efforts to destroy the postal service to enhance his $30-75 million + investment in UPS and other USPS competitors.

Not that long ago someone with such a significant conflict of interest would not be allowed to hold such a critical infrastructure position.
