eBay Seller Gets Surprise Bill for FedEx Shipping

By: Ina Steiner

An eBay seller received a surprise bill this week, adding to the chronic reports that the marketplace sometimes overcharges sellers for FedEx through its shipping label program.

When she called about her eBay invoice, a customer service rep told her that eBay raised the price of the FedEx labels from the $14 it displayed when she printed the labels to $36 - presumably never notifying her of the post-transaction changes to her fees.

"Supposedly this was because the boxes were bigger than reported, but I know absolutely that the measurements were correct," she told EcommerceBytes. "I used a tape measure on each of them, and I've been at this 20 years and have never had a problem with USPS ad accurate measurements."

She also said eBay's invoice didn't make it clear why she was charged extra because she is now enrolled in Managed Payments, apparently making it more difficult to see details of the charges. (Readers, please feel free to weigh in on whether that's the case with your invoices through Managed Payments.)

As sellers know, eBay charges commission and payment processing fees on the cost of shipping, so they pay higher eBay fees when shipping costs are higher.

The seller explained she was writing to EcommerceBytes, "Hoping I can prevent others from making the same mistake. An unexpected $120 bill really cuts into profits."

eBay is hosting members of its shipping team on this afternoon's weekly chat session - if you have questions you'd like to ask, visit the eBay Weekly Chat board at 1 pm PT (4 pm Eastern)

This is exactly why Wenig wanted to force all sellers into Mangled Payments, so they could once again steal from their sellers whenever they want to because it is so much harder to see that they are doing it.  Of course the new CEO sees no reason to change Ebays cheating ways as that is necessary if Ebay is going to show nay kind of growth compared to the other sites.Providing Sellers with easy to read reports of what they processed and received, Ebay continues to provide nothing but garbage reports for just these types of reasons.  Even the offshore programmers can manage to supply accurate reports that the Sellers need but Ebay is obviously in no hurry to allow Sellers to easily see when ThiefBay is once again stealing from them.

I guess it took Ebay so long to hire a new CEO because they had to find one who would have no problems continuing to cheat its customers (Yes Sellers are their customers whether they want to claim them or not) and risk drawing a Federal Prison sentence when Ebay finally gets caught fudging the numbers that the CEO and CFO attest to being reasonably accurate.

I had this happen to me.  My label was about $14.00 also and the bill
went up to $93.00.  I had to call Fedex and they said the box was bigger
than reported.  I kept calling with no luck in getting a resolution.  I have more
of the same boxes available so I went and measured one to make sure. Well
I did enter the correct measurements when I shipped the item and use those boxes frequently with Fedex. I had to pay the invoice but they lost a customer.

So the people screwing you are Fedex in this case.
Ebay did try to help with my bill but I had to be the one to contact Fedex who stated the decision was final.

Even the drop off  Fedex location where I bring my boxes to told me they have
been screwed by Fedex plenty of times.

@thriftyone

Pirateship does not offer Fedex or UPS.

I have shipped with Fedex and UPS a few times. I always add an extra inch to all 3 dimensions and round up an extra pound. I have not been overcharged, yet.

I'm saving a ton with FedEx lately.
Many packages are $8-$9 on FedEx but $9-$12 on PirateShip.
Always round up the inch, price does not change and no issues yet.

Just when I was considering to give eBay some new listings! Guess I’ll continue to stay with Poshmark because their shipping app is so easy to know what your cost will be. I have to charge Priority rate to ship the item but it’s a fixed amount for items up to 5 lbs. Just weigh your items with the shipping box included. So far no issues. 🤗

I do not print eBay labels because accounting would be a nightmare in the PayPal transactions data. Managed Payments is worse. The downloadable Payments transactions reports do not easily import into Excel or a database. The Orders report remains, as it was, available for only the most recent 90 days. Managed Payments can be tracked by entering each deposit manually into the accounting system register with split amounts for the original amount and deducted fees. Would the process become more time-consuming or error prone if eBay labels are deducted from Managed Payments payouts? Maybe, but I am not willing to try it.

Invoices from eBay also contain Managed payments data, but the format is not Excel-friendly. As it turns out, SixBit captures enough Managed Payments data for filing taxes and reconciling manual entries to the checking account register.

"As sellers know, eBay charges commission and payment processing fees on the cost of shipping, so they pay higher eBay fees when shipping costs are higher."

No Ebay nor MP charges the FVF based off of "costs" of shipping.  The FVFs are based off of whatever the Buyer Pays for shipping.  There is a difference.

While I do not use Fedex, this sounds a bit like an issue I had with USPS.  They to will do something similar with packages along their travel through the system.  If someone deems the incorrect postage was paid for due to shape, size or weight, then the shipper gets billed for the difference in postage.

This happened to me a couple months back and took me well over a month to get worked out and the money they pulled from my PP account refunded.  I won because USPS takes pics of the package when they do stuff like this.  From the pic they could tell I was correct and that the person that decided I had done something wrong was incorrect.

This is something USPS started doing, I think last year, but I'm not sure.  There was an article here on the subject.

FedEx has been plagued with scan errors for both weight and dimensions for some time now.  If you have to ship FedEx, at least use your own account so you can contest these errors directly with FedEx.

Also at times ebay FedEx estimates were often in error, due to the way ebay calculated them.  FedEx confirmed most of the errors were not from FedEx, so if you complained ebay would give you a credit.

I was a loyal FedEx customer for many years, basically shipping the exact same basic box size and weight.  After more and more errors kept occurring, and my rep who kept fixing them retired, I stopped using FedEx. Amazingly all those errors stopped occurring.

Dear Aggravated O.P.   DO PLEASE come back to the thread and give DETAILS as to :

Which Zip Code TO which Zip Code
What FedEx SERVICE CLASS you selected
As to the DIMENSIONS:..... Some BAD advice from others here is to ALWAYS add an additional INCH to all 3 dimensions.  NOPE.  What you do need to do is always round UP to the FULL INCH , but only on the dimensions IF more than one tenth inch beyond the INCH mark, e.g. 8.1 should enter as 9, but so would 8.9 also enter as 9.
I'm suspicious that you got BITTEN by BOTH eBay and Fed-Ex as the fruitcakes at eBay only this past WEEK ended showing sellers EBAY's own "better choice" to RUSH shipments thru to ANXIOUS buyers.  FedEx offers about FOUR classes of domestic USA shipping ranging from Very competitive SmartPost rate that STARTS thru FedEx, but is DELIVERED by USPS. .... on up to SONIC AIR or some such that is SAME DAY to many major Metro Cities in USA.
NO RATE ON FEDEX could justify JUMP from $14 to over $90 based only on SIZE.  It almost certainly got CHANGED at some point after your box went BEHIND the CURTAINS at FedEx and was CHANGED from Ground to AIR shipment.
Over 20 years ago I had a NUTZY buyer in San Antonio who ordered up replacement pre-cut FOAM for a Pelican protector case.  Warned her that a box of the FOAM for that LARGE size camera case would be RATED as something like 20 pounds although only SCALED as 7 pounds.  She said ship it.
The REAL problem came when a UPS "In-Transit shipping auditor" incorrectly entered this 7 pound 20 x 20 x 9 box as 20 x 20 x 20.  The price ZOOMED out over $100  UPS was easily fixed back then as my WorldShip account had a LOCAL Service Agent who come to my warehouse SAW the box used for that foam set and immediately the $$$ overcharge went POOF.
Good Luck

I have had surprise Fedex charges in recent months as well.  I , too, am an experienced seller of 17 years, top rated seller, etc.  I determined that ebay was not consistently calculating dimensional weight LxWxH/166 on larger packages that I sold so buyers were undercharged for shipping than weeks later fedex would send a charge through that was higher than the estimate buyer paid reflecting the DIM weight calculation. Extra charges were $40 to $60 a month. This is verifiable by comparing the shipping charges on ebay's shipping label page with the details for the transaction on the fedex site. Go to full details and shipment facts on fedex site to see the box size and weight fedex recorded. If it matches the size in the shipping label page on ebay site than it is not an issue with seller not measuring correctly as ebay CS has stated to me repeatedly even when ship office at Fedex verified my measurements and weights on each package. It is a problem with ebay's ship calculator figuring DIM weight. Ebay's response is that I should use another carrier.  Lately, past 2 months, few large corrections. Exception was recently for charges thru Oct 23, visible on old Account activity page though one does have to request custom view, all was well except for 3 of about 30 charges all calculated on Oct 8th.  Variation was $7. so will just be watchful in the future.  I am on managed payments.

fashionista:
USPS Regional Rate A and Regional Rate B boxes are NOT flat rate.  The cost is based on weight.  I noticed eBay's shipping lists them under flat-rate options, but that is incorrect.

UPS and Fedex are much much more inclined to itemize the cost by exact box size. When I had a UPS account years ago I would often get back changed on sizes off by 1 inch. Postal is more lenient. And I honestly try to measure accurately
