An eBay seller received a surprise bill this week, adding to the chronic reports that the marketplace sometimes overcharges sellers for FedEx through its shipping label program.
When she called about her eBay invoice, a customer service rep told her that eBay raised the price of the FedEx labels from the $14 it displayed when she printed the labels to $36 - presumably never notifying her of the post-transaction changes to her fees.
"Supposedly this was because the boxes were bigger than reported, but I know absolutely that the measurements were correct," she told EcommerceBytes. "I used a tape measure on each of them, and I've been at this 20 years and have never had a problem with USPS ad accurate measurements."
She also said eBay's invoice didn't make it clear why she was charged extra because she is now enrolled in Managed Payments, apparently making it more difficult to see details of the charges. (Readers, please feel free to weigh in on whether that's the case with your invoices through Managed Payments.)
As sellers know, eBay charges commission and payment processing fees on the cost of shipping, so they pay higher eBay fees when shipping costs are higher.
The seller explained she was writing to EcommerceBytes, "Hoping I can prevent others from making the same mistake. An unexpected $120 bill really cuts into profits."
eBay is hosting members of its shipping team on this afternoon's weekly chat session - if you have questions you'd like to ask, visit the eBay Weekly Chat board at 1 pm PT (4 pm Eastern) |
