As Top 10 Marketplaces Voting Begins, What About the Others?

By: Ina and David Steiner

Last week, as the Sellers Choice nominations process was winding down, an interesting comment appeared on our blog:

"Since you are doing your annual e-commerce survey, which narrows your selection down to the big e-commerce sites (eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Ruby Lane, etc.) would you include more information about the smaller and up-and-coming web sites. Perhaps, using the data you collect with this survey, you can produce an additional report on the trending new sites. It's obvious that eBay's current policies will lead to the eventual discarding of the bulk of the Mom & Pop sellers that made it what it is today. These sellers need to know where to go and where they'll be welcome."

It was interesting timing, as we noticed an increasing number of smaller sites appear in the nominations this year. While they still had a way to go before cracking the top 10, they had a sizeable number of votes and write-ins.

Many of the runners up included niche sites, such as:

- Addoway
- Artyah
- Artfire
- Delcampe
- Discogs
- Mercari
- Poshmark
- Reverb
- TIAS
- TopHatter

Classifieds sites/apps also had some fans: LetGo, Offerup, and Kijiji, as did social networking sites Pinterest and Instagram.

If you've had experience using any of these (or other) sites, now's your chance to talk them up! How are your Sales on these sites? What do you like about them, and what would you change? Which ones would you recommend to friends and family as selling (and buying) venues, and why?

Update:  I visited some of those "other" sites listed and let me tell you. Complain all you want about Ebay and Amazon, those other sites can't touch EB and AMZ in the customer service department.
Ioffer is either a money launder or a scam site.  I failed to close my account after opening it electronically.  There is no customer service phone# only an address.  They have a twitter account and I tweeted to request they close my account.
Bonanza has a poor CS department.
Delcampe is small potatoes.  They don't have a mobile app.
So one thing to want in an etail site is good customer service.  Thank your lucky stars, and it's not saying much, that there is CS at EB and AMZ.

I love ArtYah. Sales have been few & far between so far but at least my listing are being seen (unlike etsy, where I seem to have been rendered invisible). I also love the friendly & helpful feel of the site.

I am very excited about Artyah.com.  It is very much like the Etsy of almost a decade ago.  The service is remarkable and the listing gets easier and easier.  As a vendor, I am anticipating a big surge.

As a buyer, I have enjoyed browsing and purchasing  from several of the sections.  It is truly a marketplace for honestly hand crafted goods.

Artyah does get my vote. :)

I would recommend Artyah as one of the top 10 niche market places.  They are growing fast, provide excellent service to vendors and customers alike.  They are still small enough to be agile and see and act on trends and needs fast vs some of the more cumbersome behemoths.  They recognize the need of the small batch maker and as a maker I appreciate that.  They know their market, so in my book that puts them ahead of the game.

Reverb is an up and comer for people who sell new and used Musical Instruments and accessories. They also just opened a site for vinyl record collectors. I started getting serious about listing on there around October when eBay had way too many outages. Now they are about 40- 50% of my sales .

They lack some features like Bulk shipping and listing updates unless you want to use spreadsheets. But they do have a decent app for Shopify.

The main super plus' are they treat everyone like adults. They are not biased towards buyer or seller. They have many of the features that eBay has discarded like instant Chat, email and of course phone. Instant communication is a breeze and problems get worked out quickly and efficiently. Contacting support is not a two hour time suck like eBay . It's productive and it's quick.

The site architecture is modern and improving all the time but not at the expense of sellers or buyers. I haven't seen the periodic glitches and outages that plague eBay.

eBay is concerned enough about them that they matched FVFs with them but they have yet to copy the more redeeming features like not letting sellers get abused without being obtrusive about it.

The site culture seems more refined. There are no Chinese sellers and most of the big box stores avoid it because they don't give ready access to buyers personal information like eBay does .

Brand new is Reverb sites for Dealers/Sellors which is a serious engineering job . List with them and they will take your listings and through some very serious programming turn it into a very presentable eCommerce site without charging you extra for it. You can also use your own domain.

If one wanted a glimpse of where the future should be going, they should stop in. It's fast expanding verticals like this that will slowly but surely pick off both buyers and sellers from eBay and Amazon.

I have to admit that sales have been slow so far on Artyah but they have live people and actually answer questions (not canned baloney), in a reasonable time. I feel they are really working to get it all together and "handmade" actually means that. Their CS, so far, beats everybody else by a mile. I'm moving my listings over a couple at a time. The more they improve, the more I can, and will, move.

Artyah is the most personal place to sell.  Can you imagine asking a question and receiving an answer?  Yes, Craig the owner responds to questions and is always open to recommendations.

Apart from costing .10 to list for 120 days and 3 1/2% from each sale, the comraderie in the forum is outstanding; not to mention the twice monthly giveaway that shop owners take part in.

I joined Artyah mid 2017, am excited and look forward to its continuing success.

Artyah is a fairly newer site with an emphasis on handmade but also includes vintage and supplies. It is easy to use, has great customer service and a growing community of sellers and buyers. It is based in the USA but  caters to sellers and buyers around the globe. Be sure to check it out if you are looking for unique items  and a friendly place to buy!

I love ArtYah and the primary reason is because the owner was a seller on eBay and other online venue before starting the site.  They realize that eBay and Etsy for that matter has become all about drop shipping and cheap Chinese sellers flooding the listings.  I hear everyone complaining about this but now you have a new site to dip your toes into the water to check it out.  For those vintage sellers who’s items are no longer being viewed try this out. The owner has vowed not allow cheap Chinese sellers to enter the market and flood the listings with their fake handmade items that are produced in china by the millions.  He has also made a commitment to keeping the category vintage to mean vintage 20 years or older.  The owner is very quick to meet the concerns of his sellers.  He even once gave me his personal number to resolve a problem I have.  The owner is sinking a lot of his own money into developing and working on upgrades to the site.  It is easy to list on and only .10 cents a listing for 120 days.  FVF is only 3.5% and they do not tack on the shipping cost so they can make more money.  You still get discounted shipping through PayPal.  The seller has also made a promise not put his site stocks up for sale so that the site becomes controlled by investors.  If you currently are selling on Etsy you can easily transfer you listings to Artyah so that you have them listed on both places.  He is paying Google for your items to come up close to the top of the search.  I sell on Etsy but my sales have been slow.  I refuse to pay eBay 10% plus of my FVF and their stupid rules that they change every week or month are just a set up to discourage selling on the site.  I read all of the comments of people here complaining about eBay so here is your chance to put your money where your mouth is.  Even if you listed 10 or 20 items you would only be out 2 bucks.  What have you got to lose?  It is easy to list and the photos look good when you pull them up.  Not like bonaza or some other selling sites where they show the pics a size of a postage stamp.  The images are high quality and did I mention it is so easy to use.  Instead of all the whining going on here I would like to see a few of you vintage sellers to give this site a try.  Complaining doesn’t change anything.  Ebay will never be what it was.

@Twiganne
You have me convinced to give it a try. Checked it out a couple of days ago when I first saw it mentioned here. Just needed that extra push.

This site is the future for anyone totally dedicated to "true handmade", but also offers vintage and supply. It is very easy to list and reasonable. Craig running the site is really wonderful and responds quickly to questions and keeps everyone updated within the forums. As more people ... customers and sellers alike become aware of  ArtYah I think it will only move upwards as a top marketplace dedicated to Handmade. Looking forward to more people becoming aware of ArtYah!

I wish to second the positive comments about DELCAMPE. While I am not a seller on Delcampe (or any other ''venue'' site) at this time (we have our own large site), I am a buyer on Delcampe and I have had a lot of correspondence over the years with the site's founder. The buying experience on Delcampe is pleasant and effortless, which I attribute to Delcampe treating its sellers well and honorably.

One person (seemingly a troll by the sound of it) called Delcampe ''small potatoes'', but for buyers interested in collectibles categories it is a great place to buy, and thus for sellers to sell. If that makes them ''small potatoes'', that is perfectly fine -- I happen to like potatoes of all sizes if they have what I want to buy and treat both buyer and seller with respect (unlike some larger outfits).

If my company decides to resume selling on ''venue'' sites, Delcampe will be the first to get my attention and resources.

I have bought and sold stuff at UniSquare.com in the past.  It's free to list and sell there.  Not much traffic, but a great place to browse around and maybe find that unique item.  I do like the way the site is laid out.
