eBay Says Changes Will Help Sellers Build Their Brand

eBay announced changes to its store offering in the UK (called eBay Shops in that country), writing that it's a tool to "build your brand, engage with buyers and grow your business."

It will be interesting to what sellers think about how far these changes go in allowing them to engage with buyers, given that eBay is limiting the engagement to the eBay marketplace, apparently still concerned about the potential of off-site transactions.

To help with branding, eBay UK will display seller names and feedback at the top of the View Item page next to the listing headline and will move the "seller information card" higher.

"By reinforcing your presence on the View Item page," eBay UK said, "you can build trust with your buyers and get them excited about your business and encourage them into your Shop to make a purchase."

In addition, "you'll also see entry points to your Shop in search autocomplete when a buyer types in your Shop name."

Another potentially helpful change is the addition of a category module to Shops - "In March we'll be adding a module that shows up to 12 categories of your Shop and a "See all" button for buyers to explore all your categories."

eBay also announced Buyer Groups for store newsletters:

"In March, we'll also be introducing buyer groups for your Shops newsletter. To begin with these groups will be based on simple factors such as "past purchases", and we'll then expand the capabilities over time. With your mobile-friendly newsletter templates, these groups should help you increase your reach and help convert more sales.

"With the old listing frame the newsletter opt-in only existed on desktop, was positioned low on the page, and there was no buyer groups functionality that led to limited reach."

What do you think about the ability for you to build your brand on eBay Stores?

Everything they roll out to "grow our businesses" is smoke and mirrors.  Just stop already eBay.  We've been wise to your smoke blowing since the Donahoe days.

You can't fight eBay's algorithms.

How about just going Back to the days of Fun and Affordable?! And Leave the growing of OUR Businesses to US!!
As I watch all of these 'improvements' I am also watching all of my listings expire, and Not relisting them. I left the Entertainment Industry when IT was no longer Fun, so Why would I stick around Here!?
And the Biggest Tool at ebay Isn't this one!

Oh boy! Thee are truly revolutionary changes. Our sales will increase tenfold.  ...How about bringing back an option to search within the description? This would help more than their moving-things-around-chess-games.

another revenue making ploy for the 2%'ers? certainly not the sellers.
How about this - maybe some of the vast majority of higher ups takes a pay cut to help support the sellers? Seriously - nobody NEEDS to make millions per year sitting at Walkers

It seems with every seasonal update, or random press release, eBay details how they are going to help sellers grow their businesses and make more money. Instead of meaningless announcements, they should do the work to make their promises come to fruition.

Is this the same "individual seller branding" they tried to wipe out by forcing everyone into their cookie cutter bland new stores versions?

eBay decided years ago to ‘trash’ what sellers were doing to build their brands in favor of a desire to be just like every other cookie cutter foreign made knock-off commodity peddler.

eBay has wrested control of every facet of the listing and transaction except ownership title of product and physical handling of fulfillment (though even that’s another tentacle snaking out lately).  They have systematically broken both buyer and seller trust, and ‘update by update’ eroded or minimized every element that might make a seller ‘unique’, and in some cases, even identifiable as an independent entity.

They have effectively made each seller no more than an eBay vendor, indistinguishable from any other, and in some cases now, even override seller desired listing and fulfillment attribute selections as part of their ‘take’ strategies.

And now they want to pretend sellers can build their brand there?  No.  When they say build ‘their’ brand, they don’t mean the seller’s.  They mean THEIR own brand.  Literally.
