Etsy published a lot of news for sellers today, including the launch of a new guide on optimizing listings for Etsy search. There are some key points you won't want to miss, including how Etsy handles shipping costs in search:
Shipping has become increasingly important
Our buyer research continues to show us that high shipping costs or long processing times may stop buyers from completing their purchase and keep them from coming back to Etsy. Etsy search factors shipping prices into search ranking to make it easier for shoppers to find listings with competitive shipping prices. Lowering your shipping prices makes your items more likely to rank higher in search.
Etsy said its
top priority was to "make it easy for shoppers to find and purchase something they love on Etsy."
Last month, Etsy Chief Financial Officer Rachel Glaser told Wall Street analysts the company was testing promotions designed to influence seller behavior in key areas - including shipping price. She said shipping prices on Etsy were higher than people were accustomed to on other sites, characterizing some of them as "egregious." She said Etsy was looking to remove friction for buyers in shipping costs and returns.
Of course, Etsy has already used another tactic to prod sellers to rethink their shipping charges: it's now charging commission fees on the total sale price
PLUS shipping - a move that continues to upset many sellers and guarantees Etsy will see a boost in transaction revenue each year as shipping carriers raise their rates like clockwork.
In today's news, Etsy also described other factors in its search algorithm: "signals like sales"; "customer service clues like average review rating"; "relevancy"; "listing quality"; and, "in some regions, a shopper's selected location."
Etsy also explained that categories and attributes act like tags and can help sellers' listings match with more search queries - "so consider adding as many attributes as you can," it advised.
It gave an example of how that might work: "For example, a buyer on Etsy looking for a new rug for their living room who searches for a "colorful rug" will see filter options for rug types such as runner or area, and style, such as bohemian or industrial. These filters are powered by the attributes you've added to your listings."
