Keep your eyes open for the 2019 Spring Seller Update, in which we will announce a full range of important updates coming to eBay this year.

It's not clear to us why eBay announced this as an "early" seller update with lots of changes while referencing a Spring Seller Update yet to come.

Update 2/26/19 at 1:00 pm Eastern:

At 11 am Eastern, eBay sent the following email to US sellers:

Today, we're providing you with a limited Early Seller Update.

Explore new updates that will help you build your sales velocity and improve the way you run your business.

Watch for the upcoming Spring Seller Update in April, announcing a full range of platform, process, and policy updates. Plus, important new features coming to eBay later this year.

See What's New.

As always, thank you for selling on eBay
eBay Team

After many complaints from sellers that the URL took them to an error page, eBay posted the following message on the discussion boards:

"The 2019 early Seller Update link will be live later today. Stay tuned for more. We will let you know when the Seller Update is live."

eBay's Spring Seller Update for 2019 is rolling out today, February 26, 2019. One major change that is sure to fire up sellers: eBay will require all fixed-price listings to be "Good Til Cancelled" (GTC) across all eBay sites. That means sellers will no longer be able to choose the duration of fixed-price goods.

eBay is also making some fee changes in the Spring Seller Update, including changes to fees on eBay Motors UK.

All Fixed Priced Listings Will Be Good Til Cancelled - on all sites
"From 1 April 2019, we’re taking further steps to simplify the shopping experience across all eBay sites. The only listing duration for all fixed price listings for both Business and Private sellers will be Good ‘Til Cancelled."

This does not come as a complete surprise - earlier this month eBay rolled out the GTC restrictions in Australia, but it promises to be unpopular. EcommerceBytes readers discussed last month what they thought the change would mean for them if it rolled out to additional countries.

"You know eBay is counting on people forgetting that their listings will auto renew, thus generating more listing fees," wrote one seller. However, another seller said, "Longer duration listings will actually help some sellers to be found thru outside search results."

"GTC listings are stale, a complete waste," said another EcommerceBytes reader.

eBay Product Catalog: A focus on Item specifics
In the UK, eBay announced changes to the product catalog - this will likely roll out in the US as well:

"We’ve now adjusted our approach so that in the future we’ll be using Item specifics to identify products. We’ve reviewed which Item specifics are the most useful to buyers when they’re looking for products and have aligned with the way they search, including changing the names of some Item specifics to reflect this. In addition, we’re updating the filters buyers will see when searching to make it faster and easier for them to find what they’re looking for.

"This means that you’ll no longer have to match your listing against a catalogue entry, however, we still recommend that where they exist you match your products to take advantage of increased exposure and features such as product reviews."

eBay CEO Devin Wenig had admitted in October that eBay's move to a "product catalog" shopping experience has met with some resistance from buyers. He said eBay would shift tactics "to balance the needs of a habituated base of customers who are used to shopping on eBay a certain way, while pursuing an even larger base of potential customers, who have different expectations."

Since he became CEO in 2015, Wenig has touted the importance of his Structured Data Initiative (which powers the product catalog) to the success of a turnaround, but he has not been able to reignite growth. At that same post earnings call with analysts in October, he said, "We'll continue to focus on delivering significant product experience changes for new customers, while evolving the experience for our existing base of users at a more measured pace."

Send offers to your buyers in 2019
Also rolling out in the UK - and possibly to the US as well, a change that will likely be more popular:

"A new feature in Seller Hub will allow you to send offers to buyers on some of your eligible listings."

In November, eBay announced some of these changes were starting to roll out. Sellers discussed the changes on the EcommerceBytes Blog. Said one seller, "I think enabling sellers to make offers to watchers is a great idea. I have made this suggestion in the past."

UK fee changes: eBay Motors Fee Updates
And here's what eBay is telling sellers in the UK:

"We’re making changes to Listing fees, Final value fees and Optional Listing Upgrade fees for Vehicles categories (excluding Parts and Accessories) from April 2019.

"You can find the eBay UK Spring Seller Release on this page. We'll update this post when we find the announcement for eBay.com users."

We'll be sure to update you on what other changes eBay announces today, and let us know what you think - and how the changes will impact you.

@Marie - Devin has proven time and again that he will use any means possible to punish the small sellers and line his pockets with their hard-earned money. We already know that sellers who innocently end their listings are being charged a FVF, even when they can prove they didn't sell off eBay. So why would you think he hasn't already thought of a way to punish the sellers who go against his "grand" plan?

As I said, IMHO your comment was an Over-Reaction.

I'm not defending Ebay.  My comment was specific to the comment you made.

It's going to be a simple process - Just put some kind of "code" into your title one letter or 2 will suffice - say listing title blahblahblah with an A for january last letter and let it run for awhile once the system is in place - every morning you go look at your about to expire listing for the day then bulk edit/end the ones you don't want to keep.

here's my problem - how long will it take DW to figure out to tax us for ending listings thus forcing us to upgrade the store?

just give me a middle tier between my premium store and the anchor store and I'll up grade to the next level.  5000 listings - I can start today

Always felt that that "starter" store was a mistake - it brought in way too many inexperienced seller with big expectations that never happened.  Poor quality photos - absolutely horrible descriptions - crappy merchandise that they didn't want to donate to goodwill or overpriced stuff.  And they go on to bad mouth eBay to no end because they just didn't stay the course and learn what their doing and how to make it work

Then the whining started - check the boards. Had they created that middle tier just who would have bumped to that level? Only experienced sellers who already knew how to sell that's who.  We would have taken our already years of experience and kept on trucking. But we didn't get it so where am I now? Still stuck at premium and forced to create a website which is basically just storage.

I'm not leaving ebay because of a few new changes - lord only knows how many of those we have learned to work around and that's what most of us will do again.

Not a cheerleader just a realist

"This is just another Ebay punch to the small guy."

100% correct

I have 3 eBay selling accounts

The one with a basic store has on average 150-250 items

The one with a a starter store has 100-200 items

And the ID with no store only has a few items (less then 50)

With the changes coming I'll just have to better plan what items go where and maybe add a 4th account with 50 more free listings or add auctions to my listings since I get free ones that I never use.

The GTC ruling must have something to do with eBay's contentious relationship (aka lack of relationship) with Google. Unfortunately it's the kiss of death for OOAK clothing and accessory listings. Guess it's time to start seriously looking at other platforms.

I sell seasonal & Holiday items and change items every few months to coincide the time of year. Do not use GTC, nor will I ,it doesn't fit our selling. We sometimes have 12,000+ items listed at a time,to many to cancel before they end.

Ebay....you can have my Anchor store back in June when our year is up!

TERRIBLE IDEA. I use 30 day Buy It Now for non-auction items. Good forever creates STALE listings. I always wait 45 to 60 days before I relist. How many times have you seen the same old item relisted forever? I blank out when I see it. I hate this nonsense.
As for cataloging the listings - 99% of my items are one of a kind currently found like an old oil painting or a rare violin. How is a dam catalog going to help with that

@sasikat9, GTC does not work in every category.  It's great for new items, listings with multiple quantities, and popular consumer items (that are usually both new and multi-quantity listings).  It does not work that well with collectibles, antiques, OOAK items, etc.  The worst thing, though, is this is going to cause the site to have a lot more forgotten, old and stale listings than it already has. And that's one of the main gripes from buyers - there is already too much of the same old, tired, repeatedly listed crap.  I know a good bit of what eBay does is not to get rid of small sellers, but to try to cooperate with Google, when what eBay should do is completely revamp the website, fix the glitchy programming, and work on a way to get back into Google's good grace.  Gee, that's pretty much what Elliott said, isn't it?

We know that ebay programmers are the worst on the planet but they can't even do a simple link???!!!  And it is going to take until "later today" to fix it???!!!

Lord, have mercy!

@val2525

Most large sellers don't deal with used items nor OOAK. Most have multiple quanties and variations. Like I said before large sellers already use GTC as they are not concerned with looking at 1000's of items every 29 days. When you have 1000's of items you want to list and forget. As a large seller we don't usually waste our time on listing something with a quantity of 1 or 2. We don't have a major problem with the so called ghost listings and when something sells out Ebay lets us know that. We just listing and forget and could care less about a stale auction. Eventually the item sells. Also Ebay lets us know when the item has been listed for more than 16 months without a sale. At that time we just delete the item and send it to the garbage dump.

With the new Offers To Buyers feature, I think that some buyers will change their shopping habits by watching items and just waiting for the seller to reduce the price.

Hi Polly.
Im not sure ebay programmers are the worst on the planet. eBay advertises on Indeed for programmers. If I remember correctly, ebay pays them 8.35 an hour.

Programmers are detail oriented,  highly intelligent, and quiet. They don't make a fuss. They just eliminate a character here and there.

eBay finally got the update up on the site.

If you use the link: https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/seller-updates/2019-early/index.h

You
will have to clear your cache to view the update. Honestly can't ever remember an update rolled out so clumsily in the years we've covered eBay. I imagine everyone is running around putting out fires after this and the WSJ story broke about a possible settlement with Elliot Management. Ina will be putting something up shortly about that.
