eBay to Launch Preloved Partner Pilot Program

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is launching a new pilot program to highlight "preloved" fashion at the end of March, which sellers can join by invitation only. eBay will display a Preloved Partner program badge next to items that qualify. Rebecca Elliott, eBay's head of Apparel in the US, announced the program during the March 7th Seller Check-in presentation.

Elliott said eBay's goal in creating the program was to highlight the best of eBay's preloved offering, enabling buyers to shop with trust and ease.

Sellers who make the cut will get a special badge on their inventory and on their store "to indicate trust," and they'll receive exposure on a new Preloved Partner Program landing page. eBay is also promising dedicated marketing assets and events; discounted advertising opportunities; and community round tables and forums.

In order to qualify for the new program, sellers must maintain the following performance metrics:

- eBay Top Rated Seller status
- Item "Not Received" must be not exceed 1%
- Item "Significantly not as described" must not exceed 5%
- Seller must maintain a minimum 95% positive feedback
- Seller must offer 30-day returns

Certain types of items sold online have higher return rates than other items, and having to offer a 30-day return policy may be an issue for sellers who list used apparel. But the extra exposure the program offers may be tempting.

eBay's Elliott did not provide an image of the new Preloved Partner badge. You can find the presentation at about minute 38:56 on the following video eBay posted to YouTube, which also contains other presentations from Thursday's Seller Check-in:

"There are over 1000 Janet Jackson tee-shirt ... on eBay"

"you don't want to sell anything (unless it is in high demand by thousands of people) that makes you compete with 1000 other sellers."

I mean, yes, but those Janet Jackson tshirts aren't really fungible - one isn't really the same as another. People want THE exact shirt they had and lost/sold/gave away/wore out, or the one from the tour they went to but didn't buy a shirt because they were young and broke - and it needs to be their size. I see that there are a couple thousand Janet Jackson tees listed, but only 13 of them have the Original attribute checked. Newly printed ones from Junk Food or whatever, yes, they're more or less equivalent to one another, but with vintage you can't really swap one out for another unless they are indeed identical. Plus, knowledgeable tee buyers prefer to buy from a reputable seller because there are some factors that make it easy to get ripped off (mainly dry rot and fakes.) Also I don't know where the t-shirt bros prefer to sell, but I know it's not eBay, so it's not a very accurate representation of the market for tees.

“Seller must offer 30-day returns“

“This is what eBay is doing….they are matching Amazons 30 day apparel policy in order to compete. “

EXCEPT …..

1) it’s always easier to coerce someone else into doing it, then taking ANY responsibility for it yourself, right?

Wanna be part of the program???? (Insert eBay employee with fake Italian accent here) then you are going to have to play “ball” OUR way ….. capiche????

2) amazon makes sales on its platform and sellers fulfill. eBay …… makes nothing but demands.

somebody needs to erank some sellers instead of talking out their butt.

someone  also needs to keep in mind that most "HM" sellers of clothing that have this volume, are reselling. Alicia Schaffer was a good example of this.

I'll help

compare auralynne to vintagepersephone that's just one.

Burglepork says "one isn't really the same as another"

Which is why I qualified the statement with "unless it is in high demand by thousands of people".   I am quite sure an original t-shirt from Woodstock or a 1960s Rolling Stones' concert would qualify.  Would not be the case for a Primark or Target JJ t-shirt.   I think that you and I are on the same page.

@Burglepork

Most clothing companies (except perhaps the very cheapest) work on at least 100% markup from "landed" cost to MRSP/Original Retail.  Luxury brands mark up a lot more, unless the materials are truly exotic or it will be a very small run (bearing in mind that most bulk "cut make trim" factories won't get up to full speed/stated quality for less than 1000 pieces and charge a premium per piece--wastage and rework and slower speed, and a custom fabric run from a mill really only becomes viable for most price points somewhere above 5000 pieces, although that may be 5000 of different styles, so getting expected quality in Luxury does have some additional costs due to lack of scale).

"Landed" cost includes all the costs needed to get the item to the place where it will actually be offered for sale/fulfilment, including (sea) freight, duty, brokerage fees, etc.

And amen to buying used clothes, especially for own-brand retailers that have changed cut/quality over the years, and the older "cut" fits better to the nominal size run. Or you just like the vintage style better.  I  have brands that I look for (alas supplies are drying up--stuff wears out eventually).

My family buys very few new clothes apart from underwear, socks, occasional T shirt  (and bespoke period-accurate historical costumes, but that's a different story entirely)
