Do You Think eBay Feedback Should Be Searchable?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay appears to be in the advanced stages of testing a new feature that allows users to search seller feedback. Reports are coming in to EcommerceBytes and on the eBay boards where users have seen the new tab in the feedback section.

You can read more about how it works and see a screenshot in this Newsflash article.

Here's one way a prospective buyer might use the feature: I'm interested in buying a necklace from a seller and go to his feedback to see what other buyers have thought about their purchases from the seller. But scrolling through the seller's numerous listings, I don't see any feedback for necklaces he might have sold.

Using the new feature, I click on the tab and search for "necklace" - up comes all transactions for which a buyer has left feedback for that particular seller for listings with the word necklace in the item title.

While the seller's feedback is good for most of the items he sells, I can tell if it good for the necklaces he's sold.

What isn't a part of the test, and would no doubt be controversial, is the ability to search feedback comments left by buyers (or left by the seller himself).

What do you think of the feature - do you want your feedback (including comments) to be searchable?

I buy a lot and don't see any reason why I would use this.  Seems completely unneeded.  I also don't see why people buying from me would use this when I sell.  Can someone explain why Ebay is doing this?

Of course its unneeded.  Did you expect them to work on legitimate problems?

As a buyer I would find this function very handy.  There has been plenty of times over the years that I was considering purchasing something from a seller with lots of FB and though how nice it would be if I could search their FB for the item I was considering.  Of course that works best on seller that frequently sell the same item or have listings with multiple quantities.

Personally I know I will use it.

Just another way to harass the sellers.

Until feedback is a two way street all the losers, liars, thieves and honest buyers are lumped into the same apple barrel.

Why even bother with feedback anymore for sellers. It no longer counts against the sellers and it just an opinion of the buyer. If the buyer has a bad day they strike out against someone they don't know by leaving negative and this makes them feel better.

Its to bad ebay can't devise a way for sellers to be able to find out about the lazy buyer who refuses to read or comprehend what they read. Now that would be worth using.

Buyers who need this kind of search are the dreamers of the world. They think that feedback is written in stone. Some buyers don't have the education to leave correct feedback.

I agree with Marie on the one hand -- it would be very useful to find feedback for a specific item for sellers who sell multiple items. However, I can think of more important things developers need to resolve rather than adding new features that are nice but not necessary. Fix what's broke first!!

You can do a search now. Open a feedback window, set it for 200 feedbacks returned, hit  -F in your browser, enter the keyword & off you go. Granted you can only do 200 entries per clip.
I guess for the great unwashed masses, eBay's "feature" is an improvement.

I would use this. I have searched us to at least 10 pages of feedback to find a feedback on an item I am looking at.
The seller could have neg. feedback in clothing but all positive in crafting supplies.

I am in agreement with Marie on this one.

Maybe its me - but I dont understand the feature at all, would some one care to explain it please?

If you are a bad seller - whats the difference which item you are buying from that bad seller?  If he or she is bad - why buy anything from them? Is "your luck" going to be better then someone elses with one of their items?

Conversely, if its a good seller, then all his or her items will be "good". If you are worried that your specific item WONT be good ... why buy from them to start with?

Im sure Im missing something here ... its like product reviews ... its just opinion and not fact. Its peoples PERSONAL experiences not "fact" (ie consumer reports). It may give you the "flavor" of the item - but you can simply google any item and find reviews. (Do people not know what they are buying?) (Do you need a rating on a Tickle Me Elmo Doll?)

Waste of resources.....if the tech weenies want to make more things searchable what I really need to be able to search is my solds and unsolds for more than 2 months. I don't mean just see the list, but actually be able to search for a specific item.

Right now it is a terribly time consuming exercise.

Again, all ebay cares about is doing things to pander to buyers whether is it a valuable feature or not.

The only way this would be of use to me is if feedback left by seller is also searchable since I always leave FB. I could then use it to go back to sold items if needed.

i do not really see the need for this feature, while I understand Marie's point, it won't show you the actual feedback.  If it shows a neg, you won't know if it's because the item was crappy or never received, or my favorite "seller didn't leave feedback"
I think in the list of things needed on ebay, this is way at the bottom.

The pathetic thing is that search for feedback will probably function better and more accurately than the Cassini search engine in the marketplace.

If eBay wants to fix something, fix the things that ARE broken instead of all these unnecessary frills designed to make investors think eBay is improving itself as they try to beef up share values.

What eBay's over paid executives fail to comprehend is that if they fixed marketplace search so that buyers could actually find what they are looking for, sales would grow and share prices would follow sales.

Instead, we have all this effort and resources wasted on developing extemporaneous functions that do nothing to increase sales.

This is good for generic items from the China junk sellers. In those cases, reviewing the product is valid. However, what about 'private' or older listings where the title is not normally displayed? How far back does this new search go?

Dumb..... Just another way to punish sellers IMHO...How about a feature that ALLOWS the sellers to see the pattern of behavior of buyers before accepting Best Offers from them? I would like to easily find out how many negs a bad buyer has left for sellers, how many UPI Strikes the buyer has, how many return cases opened, etc... DO SOMETHING FOR THE SELLERS YOU MORONS!!!

Hmnn... I actually like this better than the stupid product reviews they are implementing, as these are reviews of the seller as it is and would give buyers confidence about purchasing an item. I imagine a seller recommended this, as the folks in San Jose would never come up with an ingenious idea.. All the reviews are already there, so no work needed.. Now how about it ebay, fix the REAL problem, the Cantseeme search engine and no visibility in Google and other search engines..

It really drives me mad the resources ebay use on new features when they have so many better things to use their programming time on!

Sellers need a feature to better protect themselves from dodgy buyers..

I agree with Pace. A seller is either competent or incompetent, and this is not a feature I would ever use. I totally agree with FEEbay that sellers should be provided with tools to determine which buyers need to be avoided. Of course, that would go against eBay's belief that all buyers are angels and all sellers are the devil incarnate.

Can't wait to search Toys R Us for the words cancelled order, just to count how many times they have run off eBay buyers.
