Etsy Takes Personalization Cue from Amazon

If you're a buyer on Etsy, Josh Silverman is watching you! The CEO told Wall Street analysts on Wednesday that he's focused on having the company learn all it can about buyers so it can then personalize the experience. Sounds like a move right out of Amazon's playbook, right down to using saved searches to intuit what customers want.

What do you add to what lists? How do you name that list? All of that gives us more data about you, the CEO said.

Even what region of the country shoppers are from may ultimately influence what they see in search results. "Up until very, very recent times, everyone in America searching for a certain keyword would get the same search results" on Etsy, he said.

The Saved Searches feature is one example of how Etsy is learning more about buyers, which will help it provide a better and more personalized experience, which will give buyers more reasons to come back more often and help conversion.

"We're working super hard to make sure that our customers have a fantastic customer experience, and that we're engaging them, learning what we can about them to deliver even more personalized experiences to get them to come back. That's really our whole focus right now."

Etsy had a very strong second quarter, reporting Etsy marketplace GMS growth of 125% in the quarter. Consolidated GMS reached $2.7 billion (up 147%) - including Reverb - with $429 million in revenue (up 137%).

- In the second quarter, the Etsy marketplace attracted 11.5 million new buyers (compared to 19 million in all of 2019) as well as 7.2 million reactivated buyers who hadn't purchased in a year or more.

- Active buyers grew 39% to 60 million for the Etsy marketplace, and repeat buyers grew 51% to 26 million.

- New sellers were up 100%, driven in part by mask sales, of which new sellers drove 23% of mask GMS (Gross Merchandise Sales).

- Etsy sellers sold more than 29 million masks, with nearly $350 million in mask-related GMS. 110,000 sellers sold at least one mask in the second quarter (April, May, June).

- Etsy's top 6 categories made up over 75% of GMS. Notably, Home & Living was up 128% year-over-year and Craft Supplies was up 138% year-over-year.

Silverman credited his decision in 2018 to migrate to the cloud ("which was completed on schedule in the first quarter of 2020") to being able to realize the full opportunity presented by the pandemic-induced shift to online shopping.

He also credited the hard push for sellers to offer free shipping beginning last year with helping to meet buyer expectations as they flocked to the site during the COVID outbreak. He said Etsy will next focus on providing information to buyers about when they can expect their item to arrive.

Silverman said sellers see value in the offsite ad program with only a 2% opt-out rate. (Note that only lower-volume sellers have the ability to opt out.)

Some additional factoids:

- This week Etsy boosted the selling fees on its musical instrument marketplace Reverb from 3.5% to 5%.

- Etsy is showing buyers a Bundles feature, displaying items to buyers that will boost their transaction to $35+ so they qualify for free shipping. (edited to clarify Etsy is showing buyers the Bundles feature)

Silverman said companies rarely get the opportunity to reshape consumers' habits. Now, everyone's habits are up for grabs. Suddenly before you go buy anything, you have to stop and think about where you'll get it - you get a 30-second pause, and "in that pause, Etsy is winning."

In more normal times, you don't get 30 seconds, he said - you've got maybe a fraction of a second. Etsy wants to rewire those habits. "If we're on the tip of their tongues and they come find us, they're going to have a great experience."

When Amazon profiled me, I avoided shopping there for almost a decade.  I had purchased two books with beading patterns.  Amazon correctly IDed me as female and started sending me emails recommending books on hair styling and applying cosmetics, which I found offensive.  They did not offer me anything more about jewelry crafting, or jewelry, or crafting generally.  Just books and magazine subs on how to play the bimbo game.

It will be super helpful for my blog content if Etsy shows me more shops selling luxury brand counterfeit items and resellers.  Yes, please!

Obvious he is getting a magic crystal ball because USPS doesn't have a clue anymore.

As a seller on ETSY for 7-8years with 2 small shops, and a brick and mortar retailer fro 28 years before that.  I am old school, I guess.  I treat customers as I would like to be treated myself.  I am not fond of all the manipulative high-sales and marketing techniques used to get customers to buy our products.  With ETSY, these tools always seem to favor the big shops that bring in the big bucks.  So I don't expect anything good to come of these changes for me anyway.
As a buyer i deeply resent the shallow attempts at ''personalization'' churned out by computer algorithms... they almost never reflect my preferences... and they really piss me off.  I know what personalized service really is. I've provided it all my life. Not to make more sales, more money... but because it makes me feel good... and for me, it's the right thing to do.  ETSY used to foster a vibrant community of buyers and sellers...it was fun to be a part of it all...but it's become a dry and shallow marketplace... with no soul.

It's like Etsy corporate doesn't know what they want the site to be.

If they consider Etsy to be a destination for shoppers looking for gifts, that kind of profiling will backfire since gifts can be purchased for strangers or people you rarely see.  I purchased a walker for my late mom on Amazon, and for years they kept sending me emails with more and more walkers.  As if I was running an elder care facility.  An online purchase can easily be a one-time event where, no matter how satisfied you are with the item, you won't be back for more.

The cesspool that is Etsy just keeps getting dirtier.  Did they mention that they no longer have a corporate HQ in Brooklyn, that they vacated the building and all their employees are now working from home?
I guess they forgot about all the millions they just stole from Etsy sellers who were foolish enough to buy labels from Etsy.
Maybe the shareholders should start doing some independent research about how Josh & Co. are  screwing the small sellers of vintage and handmade goods that are the heart and soul of Etsy, instead of believing all the BS that's being put out in their "reports."
Thousands of formerly successful sellers are being canceled and shadow banned without even realizing what's happening.  Their listings are not being shown, no matter how much they pay in bogus advertising.
Etsy has become a criminal enterprise but the NY AG isn't at all interested in doing something about actual corporate wrongdoing.
It would be really interesting to find out all of Etsy's political campaign contributions.

''Small sellers of vintage and handmade goods'' haven't been ''the heart and soul of Etsy'' for most of a decade now.  They are the minority of listings on the site,  The link to ''Vintage'' was removed from Etsy's home page in early June (more than 2 months ago), replaced with EVERYDAY FINDS -- a page where the word ''vintage'' does not even appear.

From what I've read, Etsy corporate makes political contributions wherever their interests lie, regardless of party or position on the political spectrum.  Etsy never had any kind of political stance.  Community members who thought they knew where Etsy stood on any issue were likely misled and/or mistaken.

This is so totally stupid.  What I looked at or bought this week, is NOT the thing I want to see or buy next week.  What makes anyone think that we keep looking for the same stuff over and over again.   Another stupid idea that is going to do nothing but hurt our sales.  The only sales I've made are through ads and I've had to cancel two of them because I couldn't afford to lose over $120.00 with all fees in.

FIX THE DAMN SEARCH and people will find what they want every time they search.
