eBay Finally Patches Hole in International Shipping Program

Sellers have been waiting for eBay to restore key functionality that went missing when it transitioned from Global Shipping Program (GSP) to eBay International Shipping (EIS) for international orders. Today, eBay sent an email to many sellers offering them early access to "combined shipping" on international sales.

eBay had addressed the hole in its new international shipping program in July when a seller had asked, "When will eBay International Shipping allow for combining different items into a single shipment? I'm losing sales on "add-on" stuff from my international customers since February."

eBay responded, "Combined Shipping is not an option at this time, as customs declarations require that eBay declares items at single package level. We are working to update this feature in the future."

A month later, eBay again acknowledged the problem and told sellers to be on the lookout for an announcement "later this year."

eBay sent the following message to some or all sellers today (November 30th):

Early access to combined shipping on eBay International Shipping orders now available.

Dear (name redacted),
We’re getting ready to roll out combined shipping on orders sold through eBay International Shipping, and we’re giving you early access to this feature. By offering this option on your listings, buyer shipping costs will be determined by the weight and size of your buyer’s entire order, rather than by each individual item. That way, it’ll be cheaper for your customers to purchase multiple items from you. It’ll also be more cost effective and easier for you to send your items to the domestic eBay international shipping hub.

Combined shipping is available on your eligible items immediately. We’ll continue to expand combined shipping to more categories and more sellers over the next couple of months, and as we expand, your eligible listings will automatically be included.

To learn more about combined shipping for eBay International Shipping, see our FAQs.

Thanks for being part of the eBay community.

Sellers commenting on industry boards viewed it as a positive development, though one seller wrote, "Don't light the cigars, or cut that cake just yet." The seller referenced a report from earlier this month when eBay had sent a similar note to a subset of sellers giving them early access to the functionality. But according to a discussion board post, the feature had not worked.

So far there's no announcement on the Seller Announcement board about the restoration of combined shipping - let us know if you start to see the functionality in your international EIS orders.

“We know a remote farm in Lincolnshire, where Mrs. Buckley lives. Every July, peas grow there.” Do you really mean that?

Yes! Wh–that’s about where I say “in July”.

Can you emphasize a bit “in”? “In July.”

(new international shipping program in July )

Can you emphasize a bit “in”? “In July

Why? That doesn’t make any sense. Sorry. There’s no known way of saying an English sentence in which you begin a sentence with “in” and emphasize it. Get me a jury and show me how you can say “in July” and I’ll… make cheese for you. That’s just idiotic, if you’ll forgive me by saying so

Well, Orson Wells knew it was BS and now eBay finally (after their holiday party) got around to fixing an old problem….. Huzzah!

Ladies and gentlemen of the Jury.

What time is it?  Your watch says one thing, mine might differ, and he doesn’t even wear one.  But it’s all the same at the moment.  Or moments.  We just may choose to call it something different.  Doesn’t make the ‘object’ - in this case the concept of time or the specific time mutually shared -:any different, or the fact we’re all IN this, at ‘whatever’ time it is, together.  As the saying goes.

So, what time is it?  Call it July if you choose to.  No less a tangible ‘thing’ to be IN than a bathtub, in that context, despite being obviously less tactile.  And if it’s convenient, appropriate, and (especially) established by precedent, we may even agree to the name.

Defense rests. IN it to win it.

It didn't matter before combine shipping, international buyers could only buy one item at a time.

And then there are some products where ISP may wind up costing buyers more (combined shipping or not).

My specific example:  ''Printed papers'' to the UK.  These are books and magazines of ''ordinary value'', purchased to be read, i.e. not very old & rare, collectible first editions, signed.
No duty or VAT is charged inbound to the UK, ships just fine in normal posts with a CN22/CN23 form on the outside, and parcel also marked ''PRINTED PAPERS''. Customs probably won't even give the item a second glance.

Depending on weight and dimensions (and whether you want tracking), shipping by post can be cheaper (especially if buyer is happy to accept surface post/space available, where this is still offered).  Back issue magazines and similar especially so as these can often ship as a ''large letter'' (when not too heavy/thick) rather than a parcel.  Of course these may not ''combine'' well.

So:  Consider whether to offer ISP for these items, research postal price lists.  Maybe have a second listing that has regular shipping set up (various speeds).

NB: eBay has been very inconsistent of whether it collects VAT for these items (easily identified by category).  It should NOT, these items are Duty and VAT free.  (I had to request eBay refunds for for incorrectly charged VAT in the past, sometimes successful after a couple of rounds of contact, sometimes not).

@pace306
If you are referring to Ina's article, ''in July'' is not showing emphasis, it's a link.  I guess she could have said ''eBay had addressed the hole in its new international shipping program this past July (or last July)'' instead.

Grammatically speaking, I don't think there is anything wrong with a sentence like this: ''In July, it's very hot.''  I guess you could say it as ''In the month of July, it's hot.  Too many words.
