USPS Adjusts Post Office Hours Leading Up to Christmas Day

Post Offices nationwide will be closed on Christmas Day (Wednesday, December 25, 2019) and New Year’s Day (Wednesday, January 1, 2020). All Post Offices will be open after the holidays, and regular mail delivery will resume December 26 and January 2.

Some Post Offices have extended hours leading up to the holidays (including Sundays) – and on Christmas Eve (Tuesday, December 24th), some may have limited hours.

In its announcement, the US Postal Service said that although there are no plans for limited hours on New Year’s Eve, “customers should always check with their local Post Offices for hours of operation.”

Blue collection boxes may also be impacted by early closings on December 24th. Customers who have items to mail after the scheduled pickup times December 24 should visit the Postal Locator on tools.usps.com to find local Post Offices that may be open later.

The USPS has said it expects to deliver 800 million packages between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, which it says is more packages to homes than any other shipping carrier.

To handle the volume of holiday shipping, the Postal Service expanded Sunday deliveries in high package-volume locations – and over 8 million packages are expected to be delivered each Sunday in December.

Mail carriers will also deliver Priority Mail Express packages on Christmas Day for an additional fee in select locations.
