Dear Ina,
I thought this (Forbes) article might make an interesting topic for your blog.

eBay and Amazon have certainly done American entrepreneurs a terrible disservice by inviting Asian manufacturers and resellers to the party, and even supplying them with data on what to fake and copy. And the worst offender of all is really Etsy who invited overseas manufacturers in to the marketplace, under the guise of being PART OF the handmaking process. What Etsy did has destroyed the most unique marketplace since early eBay, and probably put thousands of SMALL mom & pop, hardworking, cottage businesses, out of business.

Given the overwhelming movement that I see in this country for cutting the size of government, I expect little will ever be done about the counterfeiting. Of course we all know, that the marketplace will solve all these problems, if only government will just get out of the way.

Dear Ina,
Just got this email from Etsy saying that the US Navy is cracking down on trademark violations. They yanked all 100+ of my listings, thankfully only a small fraction of my 500+ listings.

By the way, I had some 100 listings on Vangoe.com which went defunct sometime this year; I don’t know when because the owner, Jeff Schleede, gave no notice to any of us sellers. He has refused any sort of communication via Facebook as the Vangoe.com email address. What a shame.
Sincerely,
Steve

Dear Ina,
Check out this article about Amazon in the New York Times:

“The Hidden Player Spurring a Wave of Cheap Consumer Devices: Amazon”
“Numerous electronics brands have sprung up offering inexpensive gadgets. Here’s how Amazon enables them, and how other brands may copy that success.”

Hmmm…the only way around private branding is collectibles, rare items, vintage items.
