UPS Raises Shipping Rates in Three Weeks

UPS shipping

UPS shippingUPS is raising shipping rates on December 26, 2018. The rates for UPS Ground, UPS Air and International services will increase an average net 4.9%. In addition, UPS is increasing certain value-added services and surcharges, and fuel surcharges will apply to Additional Handling, Over Maximum Limits, Signature Required and Adult Signature Required accessorials.

It could be slightly worse – this year, UPS is waiting until the day after Christmas to institute the new rates; last year, it raised rates on Christmas Eve.

UPS said the new rate hike “supports ongoing expansion and capability enhancements as we strive to maintain the high service levels you expect from UPS.”

Effective December 31, 2018, UPS will change the index for determining the Domestic Air Fuel Surcharge. If you’re a UPS customer, be sure to read over all the rates and surcharge changes carefully.

Note that marketplace sellers will see a double-whammy effect, since eBay and Etsy charge commission fees on shipping charges.

USPS and FedEx have already announced their 2019 rate hikes; see “The Online Seller’s Guide to USPS Shipping Rates for 2019.”

UPS announcement follows:

UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced U.S. rate changes.

Effective December 26, 2018, the rates for UPS® Ground, UPS Air and International services, as well as UPS Air Freight rates within and between the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, will increase an average net 4.9%.

UPS continues to make investments in capacity, technology and reach of our transportation network in order to support our customers’ growth, visibility, and service needs. Rate increases support ongoing expansion and capabilities enhancements while ensuring UPS is fairly compensated for the value and high service levels provided.
