eBay Runs Free Listing Promo as It Predicts Further Softening

eBay is running a promotion in which all sellers can list up to 1,000 listings in the auction or fixed-price format. Unlike other promotions in recent years, this one includes all sellers, but it also restricts eligibility to new listings only.

The promotion comes a day after eBay revealed poor performance of its Marketplaces business in the fourth quarter of 2014, a key selling period due to holiday shopping.

eBay also warned on Wednesday that things would get worse for the marketplace before they got better. The company’s CEO John Donaohe said he expected Marketplaces’ performance to soften further before seeing stabilization and improvement.

The new seller promotion kicked off on January 22 and runs through the 26th. Listing durations of 5, 7, and 10 days are included, and all existing selling limits and category and item limits apply and may exclude and prevent certain sellers from creating the maximum number of listings

One seller explained a workaround to the requirement that listings be “new.” He wrote, “eBay sellers who use Turbo Lister can easily get around the “new listings only” limitation as I discovered tonight. I was able to list multiple items from existing inventory this evening by simply revising the title slightly, and to be safe, I also revised the price by a few pennies. I was able to upload the items without issue, and they were counted against the 1,000 promotional listing allotment, which I was able to confirm on my selling manager page. Each item listed has been listed previously, but by rearranging the title and price, eBay sees it as a “new” listing.”

All other fees apply, see eBay website for details and restrictions.
