Pitney Bowes Gains Ecommerce Traction

Online sellers generally don’t think of Pitney Bowes as a tool for printing USPS shipping labels for their ecommerce packages – unless they are large enterprises – but this year, that’s starting to change. The company expanded its coverage beyond enterprise shippers in April with the launch of the Commerce Cloud.

Pitney Bowes Commerce Cloud includes an offering for small and medium sized businesses called SendPro, and also offers an API program for developers.

The investment is starting to bear fruit – it announced this week that Ordoro is using Pitney Bowes Shipping APIs for USPS postage as part of its multi-channel order and inventory-management platform.

Ordoro helps merchants streamline their shipping and inventory management across all their sales channels, offering tools for merchants to monitor inventory levels, manage supplier relations, bundle products and reduce shipping costs. It features an open API and integrations with all major marketplaces and shopping-cart platforms.

Previously developers relied on Stamps.com or Endicia for USPS integration for the most part – and the former acquired the latter last year. (Note that Pitney Bowes has powered eBay’s shipping-label program for many years.)

Interestingly Stamps.com is getting into inventory management through one of the companies it snapped up, ShippingEasy, as EcommerceBytes 411 reported earlier this week.
