Etsy makes periodic updates to its category and attribute structure, and on Monday it announced its latest changes. This is no academic exercise, since it’s crucial in helping items get found by shoppers – and it can affect a listing’s placement in search.
There was an outpouring of comments and suggestions from sellers when Etsy last announced category and attribute changes in August.
As Etsy explains, “Shoppers can use categories to filter searches on Etsy and when they’re shopping using Etsy’s navigation menu. Categories also act as tags, helping us match your items with more relevant searches. You should select the categories that describe what your item is, not how it’s used or what it’s made for.
“The category and subcategories you choose also determine which attributes you can add to your listing. You’ll have access to different attributes based on the category you choose. Attributes work in tandem with your tags and can affect your item’s placement in Etsy search.”
The first comment on Monday was a request for Etsy to return the Postcard category to Art & Collectibles – “We need more robust ephemera categories – please,” a seller wrote.
Etsy made changes to categories and attributes in Weddings; Drink & Barware; Pets; Art & Collectibles; Electronics & Accessories; and Slime & Foam.
