eBay will kick off a buyer-centric promotion on Thursday called “20 Days of Deals,” according to Internet Retailer. The eBay promotion will feature products priced at $20 to celebrate its 20th anniversary, and it will run for 20 days.
Update: eBay announced its 20 Days of Deals this morning, you can read more on the eBay blog.
The promotion for buyers kicks off on the same day eBay is holding a seller summit in San Jose where executives will speak about upcoming changes it will launch as part of the fall seller update.
While it’s virtually unheard of to hear eBay or Amazon reference the other, eBay did some chest-thumping in a statement to Internet Retailer when an eBay spokesperson compared its anniversary deals with that of Amazon, which held Prime Day on July 15th.
A spokesperson told the publication the idea of the sale was to connect sellers directly with shoppers. “That’s very different from (Amazon) Prime Day, which was all about buyers,”” she said.
Amazon reported that unit sales on Prime Day exceeded its Black Friday sales, with sales of 34.4 million items sold across Prime-eligible countries, with 398 items ordered per second.
And, it said Amazon sellers who participate in FBA enjoyed the biggest day ever with record-breaking unit sales growing nearly 300% worldwide, saying sellers included local retailers and businesses of all sizes.
As part of eBay’s anniversary promotion that kicks off on Thursday, it will send three of its sellers out in an Airstream trailer selling products at stops in San Francisco, Denver and New York. The three products are not the stereotypical eBay product you might think of – instead of collectibles, the three featured products are – a Seiko watch, a KitchenAid immersion blender and a pair of Audio-Technica headphones.
eBay had held a a similar promotion in July called “Hot Deals for Hot Days” in which sold designer sunglasses out of a custom Airstream that travelled to the Hamptons and New York City.
