eBay said it added “hundreds of thousands” of sellers to Managed Payments since July, bringing the current number of active sellers enrolled in the program worldwide to 340,000.
Alyssa Cutright, who is Vice President of Global Payments, updated sellers on the corporate blog on Wednesday. “During the third quarter of this year,” she wrote, “eBay managed payments for over 20 percent of on-platform volume, and we’ve expanded the program internationally to Germany, the U.K., Australia and Canada, with France, Italy and Spain coming in 2021 and more over the next two years.”
eBay is on track to manage payments for the majority of sellers by next year and complete the full roll-out for payments by 2022, she added.
Cutright mentioned the standard talking points about the program, such as giving buyers greater flexibility and freedom in how they choose to purchase on the marketplace:
“As we’ve taken control of the payments process on our platform, we see from our data that when presented with the option, new or reactivated buyers are choosing to pay with cards, Google Pay and Apple Pay across the majority of purchases,” she said.
It is worth pointing out that sellers haven’t necessarily objected to the idea of greater flexibility in payment methods for buyers and for themselves – and over the years, many wished for greater flexibility in the payment methods they could offer. But what concerns some sellers is that under Managed Payments, eBay injects itself into the process: buyers pay eBay, which then disburses the funds to sellers.
Even then, there are some advantages to sellers under a managed payments model, as the Etsy model has shown.

Didn’t they announce in May that they were going to add 4 million sellers into MP in June? So only 344K accepted their forced offer? Well that’s not a good sign.
I was supposed to signup for managed payments this summer but did not. When submitting new listings I always get a pop up telling me my ability to create new listings may be interrupted…..I always click through and ignore the warning. I finally received an ultimatum email tonight title” Register for managed payments now to reinstate your ability to create listings”.
So long Ebay, you need me more than I need you! With the increase in stock price since the beginning of COVID you can not afford an earnings miss in any upcoming quarter.
Glad I started my shopify store back in May when this all started going down. Time to migrate the last of my ebay customers to over there.

We are still boycotting since the end of April and they will never get our 250k in sales per year back.
I’m in MP since July, biggest problem we’re seeing is ebay still does not have a usable finical summary. Even when I call in the reps have no clue, I downloaded the sales report 1st of Sept. then again on 16th, numbers were not the same. If I can get solid numbers for my accountant then how am I suppose to file correct tax return. Ebay say’s it’s downloadable to accounting programs but have to SAAS the provide, guess what that cost $29 a month plus have to pay for the domain you use to keep track. HOW is that saving me money, paypal was quick and easy, I could get my numbers up to the minute. Several sellers are all over the boards begging ebay to come up with a simple summary and there’s no answer. EVEN worst we still can not get a confirm answer whether sales tax collected from buyers will be on the 1099 or not, reps on the board sent ppl to a paragraph that says yes and no, reps on the phone, one says yes and another says no.

One of my selling accounts has relieved a “you can no longer create new listings on eBay” message.
Another seller account relieved both a “you can no longer create new listings on eBay” and “you can no longer revise, relist or create listings on eBay” messages.
Not one of the 340,000 sellers who have volunteered to switch to managed payments, my response has been to close my eBay stores and end any listing that requires an inventory change because items have been sold on my independent ecommerce site,
Given eBay’s well published aggressive nature, I have no intention of complying with their Managed Payments mandate,
eBay will will have to end my GTC listings, at which time I will have nothing further to do with the venue.
Good riddance.
ebay knows the EXACT number. Why hide it with a generic “hundreds of thousands”?
That could be off by 99,000 to 199,000, depending on who’s doing the rounding.
