eBay Urges End to Postal Disruption in Canada

eBay

eBay logoeBay has gotten involved in the postal strike in Canada a day after Canada Post suspended its service delivery guarantees due to delays it blamed on escalating rotating strikes by the union.

Canada Post said on Wednesday that in Toronto alone, more than 180 trailers full of parcels, packets and mail sit idle as a result of the disruptions.

eBay Canada called on the federal government to legislate an end to the Canada Post contract dispute. Andrea Stairs sent a letter to the Prime Minister and others encouraging the government to “explore all available legislative solutions to alleviate the current situation,” according to the Globe and Mail.

The timing comes as some of the biggest holiday shopping days approach, including Black Friday (November 23). Stairs said, “Should the Canada Post service disruptions continue through this key retail moment, these SMBs will be seriously disadvantaged in competing for U.S. demand.”

The newspaper said Canada Post has issued what it called a “time-limited” contract offer to its employees and published some details.

The union informed its members: “On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, we received a new offer from Canada Post for both the RSMC and Urban Operations bargaining units.” It said it had reviewed the offer, and stated, “Canada Post has made some movements towards addressing our key priorities, however, we have a long way to go to achieve a negotiated collective agreement.” The offer expires on Saturday.

  1. Legislate an end to the postal strike? I see. It’s “free market this” and “free market that” until you don’t get what _you_ want and cry to the government to force others to provide it. Here’s a clue, business community: use a different package service. Canada Post doesn’t owe you anything. You’re not entitled to their labor or anybody else’s. If you can’t afford the alternatives, then shut up and “live within your means.” Hey, how’s that sound when you’re on the receiving end?
