eBay and PayPal’s Mobile Shoppers Spend Double over Holiday Weekend

eBay and PayPal nearly doubled the amount of “mobile enabled commerce volume” (ECV) for the recent 5-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend period, seeing an increase of 96% year-over-year. eBay spokesperson Ryan Moore confirmed the mobile ECV figure took into account eBay and PayPal, but not eBay Enterprise (formerly called GSI Commerce).

And while the Sunday following Thanksgiving 2013 was its busiest mobile shopping day during the period, eBay believes that the busiest day of the year is yet to come.

eBay did not break out total GMV growth rates specific to eBay Marketplaces, Moore confirmed. Like last year, eBay kept most numbers close to the vest by only revealing mobile shopping figures. This year, it was even less transparent with its numbers.

First, here’s a look at the data from last year to refresh our memories, followed by this year’s numbers.

eBay, PayPal and eBay Enterprise Mobile Growth Rates from Last Year
eBay saw a 133% increase in mobile U.S. volume transacted on Thanksgiving 2012, compared to 2011, and saw a 153% increase in mobile volume on Black Friday 2012 compared to last year.

PayPal saw a 173% increase in global mobile payment volume on Thanksgiving Day 2012, and saw a 193% percent increase in mobile payment volume on Black Friday 2012, compared to last year,

eBay Enterprise (called GSI Commerce) saw a 170% increase in mobile U.S. sales on Thanksgiving Day 2012 compared to 2011, and saw a 198% increase in mobile sales on Black Friday 2012 compared to last year.

eBay, PayPal and eBay Enterprise Mobile Growth Rates from This Year
Over the five days, the number of mobile shoppers on eBay more than doubled from the year prior. When looking specifically at activity on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, eBay saw the busiest mobile shopping time was outside of traditional store hours, with activity peaking at 9 p.m. ET.

On Thanksgiving, PayPal saw a 91% increase year over year in consumers shopping through PayPal mobile around the world, and its mobile TPV increasing by 114.7% compared to Thanksgiving 2012. PayPal also saw an increase in shopping with mobile devices on Black Friday (compared to Black Friday 2012), with 99.2% more consumers shopping through PayPal on their mobile device on Black Friday 2013. And it said Cyber Monday was the biggest day in mobile payment volume in the history of PayPal to date.

PayPal also released data that showed on Cyber Monday 2013, there was a 93.6% increase in consumers shopping through PayPal on their mobile devices and a 115.6% increase in global mobile TPV (total payment volume) compared to Cyber Monday 2012. The most popular time to shop via PayPal came after the work day was over: 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm PT saw the highest frequency of mobile shopping via Paypal in the US.

On Thanksgiving Day, eBay Enterprise saw the number of consumers accessing its platform or the platforms of its partners from mobile devices increase nearly 130% and saw mobile orders increase nearly 127% compared to Thanksgiving Day 2012. On Cyber Monday, eBay Enterprise saw the number of mobile shoppers increase 115.7% and mobile orders increase 88% compared to Cyber Monday 2012.

eBay’s Most-Shopped Categories
The most shopped categories on mobile this Thanksgiving weekend were Fashion, followed by Electronics and Home & Garden. eBay featured several hot deals throughout the 2013 “Cyber Five” period, which included 1,500 iPad Minis (16GB Wifi) selling out in a mere 9 minutes (167 sold per minute) on Thanksgiving 2013 and 2,000 Wii U 32GB Bundles (Super Mario U & Super Luigi U included) selling out in 21 minutes (95 sold per minute) on Sunday following Thanksgiving 2013.

eBay Predicts December 15th to Be Its Busiest Mobile Shopping Day
eBay is predicting Sunday, December 15, to be its busiest mobile-shopping day. Last year, its busiest mobile shopping day was the third Sunday in December (December 16, 2012).

And in total for the year, eBay Inc. expects to generate $20 billion in mobile commerce volume and $20 billion in payments volume in 2013.

eBay called the holiday weekend the “Cyber Five,” coining a new phrase to describe the 5-day shopping period that included Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. You can find more about eBay’s holiday mobile shopping numbers on the eBay blog.
