eBay to Open Fulfillment Center in Canada

eBay Enterprise will open a new fulfillment center in Ontario, Canada in the second quarter of this year, bringing the total number of warehouses to eight. The company currently has five fulfillment centers in the U.S., one in Canada, and one in Manchester, UK. In combination, they give eBay Enterprise more than 3,000,000 square feet of fulfillment space in which to fulfill orders for its retail clients.

The new 150,000 square foot facility in Ontario will support client growth, including The Children’s Place, which recently signed a new multiyear agreement with eBay Enterprise, formerly called GSI Commerce, which eBay acquired in 2011. GSI Commerce had opened its first fulfillment center (300,000 square feet) in Louisville, Kentucky in 2000. It also operates call centers for retail clients. Earlier this year eBay announced the availability of a combined Magento and eBay Enterprise solution specifically geared towards enabling omnichannel success for mid-sized retailers.

In Thursday’s announcement, eBay Enterprise’s interim president Tobias Hartmann said, “The Canadian market is providing new commerce opportunities for brands and retailers and our clients are turning to us to support their growth strategies in this Region. We are committed to offering our clients the capacity, speed and scale required to deliver an exceptional experience to their Canadian customers.”

The new facility extends eBay Enterprise’s fulfillment and freight offerings in Canada and includes automation, such as conveyance and Put-to-Light technologies, to speed package delivery times.

Spokesperson Kelly Henry said eBay Enterprise does not use robotics, but they have leveraged its experience with other fulfillment center automation implementations to improve floor design strategy and technology to optimize efficiency and consistently deliver orders successfully and on time to enhance the consumer experience for its clients.
