Etsy Fixes Search Glitch that Hid Listings

Etsy experienced a problem displaying listings in search results late last week but reported the problem resolved as of Sunday morning.

“We are currently investigating an issue with some listings not showing up in search. We’re working quickly to resolve this issue,” the company announced on Saturday morning after sellers reported the issue on Friday morning. The problem, according to an Etsy moderator: “They’ve identified the problem with listings created/edited/renewed not appearing in search results with specific filters set such as the “Ships to” and “Item Type.””

The Etsy employee added that the problem “was not in any way connected to tests intended to improve search results.”

Another Etsy moderator came back to the discussion thread on Sunday morning to say the issue had been resolved and provided an explanation. “For a bit of context, we upgraded a piece of infrastructural software that helps us index listings into search. There was a bug in the upgrade that caused listings to be indexed without the information needed to power filters. Because of the nature of the issue and its connection to the recent upgrade, it took a bit of time to identify the root cause and figure out how to fix it.”

She apologized for the problem, and had some advice as well. “We’ve seen a few reports from sellers that are still having trouble locating their listings with the shop location filter applied. Remember that in order for your items to be found in local search, you first need to select a profile location.”

Etsy provided updates about the problem on its Status announcement board.
