eBay announced it’s expanding the rollout of Managed Payments in parts of Europe by the end of the first quarter. The company is currently rolling out its own payments management to sellers in the US, Germany, UK, Australia and Canada. It will roll out payments to France, Italy and Spain “later in Q1 2021,” which ends March 31, 2021.
eBay announced the news in a post on the eBay Tech blog on Tuesday. It also said it would roll out Managed Payments to consumer sellers by the end of this year. “In our journey toward a simpler, more modern managed marketplace, eBay is expanding its management of payments to all consumer sellers by the end of 2021,” it wrote.
“With eBay managing payments, we now control the end-to-end experience for our sellers and buyers. From consolidated fees, customized reports, monthly statements, refunds and returns to labels and tax documentation, sellers will now be able to access everything directly on eBay.”
The post went on to explain how eBay built an “experience service layer to aggregate all upstream data and serve platform-specific responses to the desktop, mobile web, and iOS and Android app clients.”
It pointed to eBay.com/payments where sellers could learn more. In a FAQ on that page, eBay noted certain categories were excluded: “eBay sellers that frequently list in restricted categories will not be required to register for managed payments until these categories are compatible. We will continue to support sellers through the expansion of managed payments and are working to expand the types of items allowed by sellers in managed payments through 2021.” eBay plans to lift restrictions on the Coins & Paper Money and Bullion categories on January 25, 2021.

Though now maybe eBay (since they control everything) should be forced to pay sellers as employees and share the tax burden (pay %50 of it) since they now effectively run our businesses ?!
Once Europe is onboard, I expect there will be far less foreign listings on eBay’s US site, which might be a good thing, as there will likely be far less clutter in user search results.
With regard to the anti-competitive practices that the EU has accused a number of large US corporations of engaging in, it would come as no surprise if eBay’s managed payments inventive came under EU scrutiny once sellers begin reporting their difficulties in receiving buyer payments and/or find out that at their own discretion, eBay preemptively refunds customer remittances.
As some might recall, a number of years ago, the Australian government blocked eBay’s attempt at .restricting the manner in which buyers paid for items on ebay.com.au.
I seem to still be missing where Ebay says they are going to roll out Mangled Payments to their Chinese partners. When are they going to forced into your glitch filled, money holding, miscalculating program? Or were they smart enough to make sure in their contract with Ebay that Ebay would never have the opportunity to steal money from the Chinese Sellers? Also when is Ebay going to automatically issue return shipping labels to US buyers who get ripped off by a Chinese seller and when they have to shell the money out up front it costs more to send it back than the item originally cost and of course the Chinese postal service never seems to manage to deliver the items with scans proving they got the items.
The fact that China is not being forced into this program gives the Chinese another large advantage over the US and now European countries as they will not get hit with the increased FVF’s,. nor have their money lost or held by Ebay because the program still doesn’t work. I cant wait until the EU starts banging on their doors due to the errors in how much the Seller gets and when the money starts getting lost just as it does here. If those issues do not happen over there, it points the finger right back at Ebay breaching their contract with all US Sellers by intentionally stealing money from the US Sellers and not honoring the Processing agreement.
Good luck, I was on the phone for an hour and half with a ebay rep, she couldn’t figure out where ebay got the numbers for their financial report, not to mention having to go to 3 different pages to collect this number and that, which none matched. You would think after 2+ years they’d just have one place to click and download. AND when a ebay rep in the accounting department can’t figure it out how am I,
Some of the elements may not even be legal in the EU as they have VERY different regulations in many countries about how online payments and transactions are handled. PayPal is subject I believe to different regulations than typical credit card companies, eBay’s structure will be closely scrutinized by regulators overseas
Time will tell if their scheme can be implemented legally for Cross Border transactions. They’ve gotten their hands slapped many times over there. .
I’ve been on managed payments for a while now without issue (well rather without more than the usual), but the latest round of offerings to Sellers in Australia are asking for their ABN and telling Sellers they need to open a new bank account and link it to ebay (even after they have provided copies of their bank statement to ebay for their current one). I read on here last year that they were doing this in the US. Where they wanted the seller to open a new account and sign into it through ebay (effectively giving ebay their sign-in details). For those in the US, what became of that, as i havent read anything recently on it? Is it still happening? It is strange that they are suddenly trying it here……
